“Hey,” he smiled at me as he crossed his arms over his chest and leaned against the doorframe. Thor sat down by his feet and pushed his body against Mac’s solid thigh. Mac’s gaze dropped to the back of Chase’s head, his eyebrows drawing together slightly before he looked back at me. “Am I interrupting something?”

Chase turned around, his eyes widening as he realized who Mac was. “Wait, Thor’s owner is Mac Sullivan? Why didn’t you tell me that?” Chase quickly rose to his feet and walked over to Mac with his hand out. “I’m Chase Odell. I’m one of the coaches here. I was just talking to Jules about how great of a dog Thor is.”

Mac shook his hand and smiled before glancing at me. “He is a great dog, isn’t he, Jules?”

His tone was off. It wasn’t his normal warm, playful self. Chase didn’t pick up on the shift in him and thought he was being friendly. But I noticed it. It was like there was a thorn stuck in his side. His eyes weren’t as soft as they normally were. The muscle in his jaw ticked.

Mac Sullivan was jealous.

I stifled a laugh. “He is. We were talking about how great he has been here and whether or not you would let me bring him back.”

“My dog isn’t for rent,” Mac said as he looked down at Thor. Thor was staring out the door, watching a group of kids as they ran past, laughing. His ears perked up and he looked like he wanted to go run with them. “But I would be okay with him getting out of the house when I’m not there.”

“Really?” Chase asked him, his face lighting up. “Thanks, man! The kids are going to be so excited to hear that. They thought today was his last day and have a special treat for him.”

Mac smiled a genuine smile and nodded. “When I’m at practice and games, Thor is just left by himself. I think it would be good for him and give him something to do.” He looked back at me again. “Only if you’re okay with toting him along with you.”

“Of course,” I told him as I pushed my chair away from my desk and straightened my spine. “Thor is never a bother.”

“I’ll go tell the kids,” Chase chimed in before disappearing from my office, leaving Mac and I alone. The lingering tension was still thick in the air and he pushed away from the doorjamb before closing the distance between us in my office.

“Coach Chase seems nice.”

I tilted my head to the side, my eyebrows drawing together as he sank down into the seat across from me. “He is.” I sighed with annoyance. “Your insecurities are showing, Sullivan.”

There was a cruelness in the smirk that pulled on his lips. “I’m not insecure, baby. I know he can’t make you scream his name the way I make you scream mine.” He winked. “You’re nice to him, so I know you don’t have any feelings for him.”

“So what is your problem with him then?”

Mac planted his hands on my desk and leaned across the space as his face dipped close to mine. His eyes burned holes through my own. “You’re mine, Juliette.”

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me,” he murmured, his voice low and expression soft. “I’m staking my claim. Marking my territory. Chase Odell needs to know that you’re spoken for.”

I rose to my feet, inserting my face directly in his. “Chase is not a threat, Mac. And with the way you came in here, I’m sure he got the message.”

Mac pushed off the desk and walked around it. I turned around to face him as he reached me. He moved closer, his legs pushing mine backward until my ass hit the wooden desk behind me. Mac’s hand slid around the nape of my neck and I tilted my head up to look at him.

“Did you get the message?”

My mouth was instantly dry and my tongue darted out to wet my lips. I watched his gaze drop down to my mouth before moving back at my eyes. “I’m not so sure I did,” I told him, my voice barely above a whisper.

A ghost of a smile danced across his lips and his face lowered to mine. “Let me show you instead.”

His mouth captured mine, stealing the air from my lungs as he pushed my lips open with his tongue. He wasted no time deepening the kiss as his tongue made contact with my own. My chin lifted higher, giving him more access as he slid his hand around the front of my throat and tightened his grip on me. Our surroundings faded away and he kissed me senseless.

My mind barely registered his hands as they dropped down to my waist and he hoisted me up onto the desk. His body moved closer to mine, my legs parting to let him in. Instinctively, I wrapped my legs around his waist and held him close to me. My hands fisted the front of his t-shirt and his fingers were in my hair, pulling my head back to give him even more access to my mouth.

Our tongues were tangled in their own dance. He was consuming me, surrounding me, pulling me into the depths of him. I was entirely lost in Mac Sullivan and it scared the shit out of me. I kept people at arm’s length for a reason, and I could feel myself slipping. There wasn’t anything left for me to grab onto except for him. I was falling for him, but I knew I couldn’t. I knew it was something I couldn’t succumb to.

But that didn’t mean I was going to deny myself of the pleasure that he could give me.

A loud knock on the open door to my office had my body falling rigid. Someone cleared their throat. I pulled back a bit, my chest heaving with every shallow breath I took as I looked at Mac with my eyes wide. His lips were swollen from kissing me, his cheeks flushed. He looked past me and then smiled my way as he took a step back.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt,” Chase said in a nervous tone as I hopped off the desk and turned around to face him. I was a touch embarrassed by the fact that he just walked in on Mac and I making out. The pit of my stomach rolled as I realized that Chase was the only person to see us like this… and he knew my father coached the team Mac played for.

“You’re fine, Chase,” I laughed nervously as I pulled my hair back into a ponytail. Mac stood back with a look of satisfaction on his face. Chase was clearly uncomfortable, but I knew it was because of what he walked in on, not because he saw me with another guy. Things weren’t like that between us. “Did you need something?”
