"Please,” I begged.

The plea was suspended in the air, and no one said a word. I held his gaze, blue to brown, holding on to the last shred of hope that I wasn't fighting a lost cause.

A full minute passed, and there was still no word. Then, another thirty seconds, and I just knew.

Inside me, there was surprisingly no storm brewing. In fact, all that remained was a calm defeat, coupled with the heartbreaking realization that I would never have the kind of father I wanted. The kind I needed. And somehow, I would have to find a way to deal with that.

"Fine," I whispered, removing my glasses to dry my tears with my sleeve before putting them back on and straightening my back. "I guess we're done here."

I tightened my grip around Derick's hand before releasing him, and then I started to make my way to the door.

"Felicity." The depth of emotion in my father's voice stopped me, yet I didn't turn around.

"There's still a seat for you at the table,” he said. “Come work for me. I won't ask again."

I did turn around at that moment, but only so he would see the absolute dejection in my eyes that he had put there.

Then I swung on my heel and walked away.

twenty-one

Aaron

Not even when I'd left Scotland at seventeen, with the thought that I might never see my mother again, had I felt this low.

And it was all because of one amber-eyed woman who had somehow etched her name into my heart with her slim, delicate fingers. One minute she'd been on her knees with her heart-shaped lips around my cock, and the next, everything was spiraling out of control.

How did I think I could keep the fact that I was AaRogue from Felicity for so long? She was intelligent and, quite frankly, the most brilliant woman I’d ever met. Of course, she’d figure it out.

In hindsight, I should’ve said something. Anything. Because now things were just getting good, and I’d blown it all to shit.

If Felicity thought I was giving up, then she hadn’t been paying attention. After her outburst in front of the entire OceansPlay staff earlier today, a reasonable man would have cut his losses and moved on.

I was obviously a dumbass, because I was positively and irrevocably pussy whipped.

Hence, why I was standing outside her apartment and rapping a knuckle against the door. Staying away was impossible. I craved her. Needed to touch her, to feel her body pressed against mine, to fucking taste her.

I knocked again, and five seconds later, the door opened. Her eyes widened as she saw me. I noticed the exact moment she resolved to shut the door, abruptly putting my leg in between it and using one hand to push it open.

"Get out!" she said in frustration as she struggled to push me back, but she might as well have been hitting a brick wall. "Fucking get out!”

"No," I grunted, grabbing her hands in mine to still her movements. "Stop fighting me, baby."

"Don't call me that!" She shoved her body away from me, giving up and walking into her apartment.

I bit back a smile as I shut the door behind me. How cute that she thought she would be able to fight me. Gone was the timid woman I met a month ago. Felicity had transformed into a feisty warrior princess, and I loved it.

She was sitting on one of the stools behind the counter in the kitchen, typing away at her laptop. I took the silence as an opportunity to look around the space. It wasn't big, but somehow, it felt very…cozy. And colorful, too. It was an artist's haven. Cream-colored leather sofas decorated the small living room, and a brown center table sat in the middle. The space was painted light green and white, and several paintings hung on the walls.

The large TV facing the sofas was the only expensive item in the living room. Everything else looked pretty simple.

It was apparent she loved it.

I couldn't help the smile that played on my lips. I neared her, raising a brow when I saw what she was doing. "Jungle Justice? I could've sworn you hated that game now."

"Yeah, well, you're not important enough to make me hate my favorite game. And I already unfriended you."

I winced. "Ouch."
