Nobody got to tell me who the fuck I was.

Maddy was smiling like a fool. If I didn’t know better, I’d think she was fangirl-ing.

"Well, I think that's sweet." Her smile was so wide it almost tore her face in two. "Do you love him?"

It was a question I'd been asking myself frequently these past few days. He'd told me he loved me, and I still wasn't sure I believed him. I had so much doubt about men that’d been sown and germinated for such a long time that it was almost impossible to let myself go and just be.

I was still pondering the question when Jeff's assistant messaged me that he wanted to see me.

"Uh oh." Maddy clicked her tongue over the roof of her mouth. "He sent his assistant. That's bad."

I heaved out a sigh, mentally bracing myself for the worst. Jeff had said he would take some time to consider my future with OceansPlay, and I guessed he was done pondering.

I squeezed Maddy's arm. "Wish me luck." I would certainly need it.

"Good luck, babes. I'll be right here when you get back."

I nodded, heading for Jeff's office on the seventh floor. OceansPlay was a big company with over ten floors, and glass decorated most of the walls. It was beautiful, and I came to love working here.

In the two years I'd been here, I'd found a best friend and a…another friend in Aaron. I could even converse with Arjun now. If I were honest, I would hate not to wake up every morning to prepare for work.

Working for my father was out of the question. If I lost this job, it meant that I would be on the market again, looking for another job. Job hunting was an actual bitch.

Outside Jeff's office, I exhaled deeply before knocking on the glass door. Jeff lifted his head from the paper he was scribbling on, let his gaze sweep over me briefly, and hope slipped out of my grasp like sand.

"Come in,” he said.

I walked in, intertwining my fingers in front of me as I moved. He gestured for me to sit, and I crossed one leg over the other. I made a show of arranging my skirt around my legs before lifting my eyes to meet his.

Jeff dropped the pencil in his hand on the paper, crossed his arms over his chest, and leaned back in his chair. His long blond hair, which he tucked over his ears, scattered around his shoulder like a curtain, and his blue eyes, staring at me, were so blank that I couldn't tell what he was thinking.

"Felicity—"

"Before you say anything, Jeff, I just want you to know I would never do something so horrid. I've been working here for over two years, and most people here don't even know I exist. You know as much as anyone that I like to keep to myself and would never do anything that would bring me such untasteful attention."

Jeff clenched his jaw. "I know that, but the facts remain that the leak happened from your computer, and I can't explain that to the higher-ups without looking like an idiot."

I swallowed because I didn't have anything to say to that.

"I know you didn't do it." He pressed his index and forefingers to his temple and rubbed slow circles. "Aaron told me what happened between you two."

All I could think of was that Aaron had fought for me. And it was a slim ray of light in an otherwise bleak world.

"For the last time,” Jeff said, “do you have any explanation for why the leak came from your computer?"

I averted my gaze for a split second before redirecting my attention back to him. I shook my head sadly.

He sighed. "I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I have to do this."

My eyes watered, and my heart raced. I knew what was coming, but hearing the words made it seem more real.

"You're fired." Jeff looked away.

A tear dropped. Then another.

"Please pack up your desk and turn in your keys by the end of the day. You may go." He couldn't even look me in the eyes.

Nodding, even though he couldn't see me, I stood shakily, gripping the edge of his desk for support.
