Hecate hugged the woman while I tried to remember everything I knew about Hades. If my information was correct, then Phony must have been Persephone, the Goddess of Spring.

"Hecate," the God of the Underworld said reservedly. "What brings you to us unannounced?"

"A wonderful surprise, Kate!" said a delighted Persephone, who was now holding her friend's hands as if she didn't want to let her go. Hades' gaze settled on his wife. The previously indignant expression gave way to a softness and love that made my heart ache. When someone looked at you like that, it was true, unconditional love. I knew that. A longing tightened my heart.

"And who have you brought with you?" asked the Goddess of Spring curiously as she scrutinized me in a friendly but calculating manner.

"This is Myrina," Hecate replied without turning to me. "Lucifer sent me to search with her for her deceased fiancé."

Hades' sharp gaze seemed to pierce me. Slowly and menacingly, he walked towards me. His eyes were a different shade of gold from Tanael's, and the edges of his irises were almost glowing. I could feel a kind of invisible veil around me, searching my body and finally penetrating my thoughts.

I held my temples with narrowed eyes. I felt an immense urge to banish these invisible claws from my head.

"Hades!" hissed Hecate, and my thoughts were mine again. Exhausted, I sank to the ground.

"Luze can't just send you into my realm!" he shouted angrily. "I know he's not so strict about the rules, but apart from true gods and angels, only the dead are allowed to enter my world."

He took another step towards me. Fearing he would penetrate my head again, I raised my hands protectively above me.

"She looks anything but dead," the god hissed.

"Hades, darling," Persephone intervened and took her husband by the arm. "Calm down for now. Luze will surely have a good reason for this."

The God of the Underworld gazed at his wife. "You are right. I'm sorry." He smiled at the spring goddess and kissed her lovingly on the cheek.

Then he turned back to me.

"Girl, what exactly are you doing here?" he wanted to know.

"I'm only human, and I'm searching for my fiancé, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time," I replied and stood up slowly. It was time to prove I really didn't need Tanael's help. So, I swallowed my fear and stepped towards the gods.

CHAPTER 9

Hades' golden eyes rested thoughtfully on me.

"Hecate," he now turned to the goddess. "Since when does Luze send someone to me to find her betrothed?"

"We think he might know more about the problems in the human world," she replied with a sharp look, which was probably meant to make it clear to the God of the Underworld not to interfere here.

What could Alex know about the Knights of John? Surprised, I gazed at Hecate, but she avoided me.

"Tell your husband not to get so upset. What kind of damage can one person do down here?" She laughed and put her arm around Persephone's shoulders. "Perhaps you'd like to come with me and keep me company on this extremely boring affair?"

Persephone's face brightened. "That's a good idea, then I can show you the newly created part of the garden. I've taken inspiration from Luze." Excited, she took Hecate by the hand and was ready to set off.

"Wait!" I shouted in amazement. "How are we going to find Alex?"

"Alex?" the Goddess of Spring wanted to know.

"Her fiancé," Hecate added to my sentence.

Hades' face suddenly became surprisingly mild. "Come with me, girl. Let's sit in the shade, and I'll explain it to you."

With Kerberos and the goddesses in tow, he led me to a small, shady terrace under tall palm trees. A cozy seating area invited me to relax, and a jug of lemonade was on the table next to a sofa.

"Would you like a drink?" he asked me. On the one hand, I was reluctant to accept a drink here in the underworld, but on the other, I didn't want to refuse his hospitality; after all, I was still alive, although I was sure that this god could easily change that. It would probably only take the blink of an eye.

"Gladly," I replied in a hoarse voice and watched as Hades poured the lemonade into a glass. The sofa was pleasantly soft. I took the drink with a trembling hand and sipped it carefully. I was amazed to discover that it was delicious.
