Eek your brother’s done with the game. I gotta go.

I put my phone on do not disturb and stowed it away on the other side of the room so I wouldn’t be distracted again.

The club buzzed around me. The energy vibrated off the walls, young people dancing with their friends, potential lovers, and other partygoers.

And I sat there alone sipping my hard cider.

Tate, my current security guard, stood in the corner scanning the scene. Luna buzzed in and out of the room, darting away whenever the latest crisis arose.

When Luna gave an order, people listened. The guest experience mattered most to Luna who would do anything to make the high-rollers happy, which meant she had to do a lot of schmoozing.

I knew all about that world and yet I didn’t envy Luna one bit.

Suddenly Tate got a call and surveyed the room again. It cramped my style, not that I was really enjoying sitting in a VIP booth by myself.

But the music at least took my mind off of Sebastian. Now that I'd completed my final piece, with the adrenaline ebbing from me and finally having an opportunity to think about things, I knew I would need to apologize. At least for running out of his house, after he so graciously took me in over the last few weeks.

I certainly wouldn’t apologize for demanding he talk to me like a grown ass man to tell me his feelings, but, ya know, baby steps.

The man clearly didn’t know how to handle this relationship and yet he demonstrated to me time and time again how much he cared.

That had to mean something.

Tate moved, as someone tried to enter the room.

The towering body, the windswept hair. I’d recognize him anywhere.

Sebastian. The man still stole the breath right out of my lungs.

Realizing there was no threat, Tate stepped aside. “Sorry, sir. Just had to check. You were coming up those stairs fast.”

Sebastian patted the man on the back, but his gaze never left my face. He opened his arms as if he wanted to tug me into a hug. My body felt the loss of what could have been when Sebastian stopped himself, dropping his hands to his sides.

“What are you doing here?”

His gaze lingered on my body and then settled on my lips briefly before meeting my eyes. “‘I’m here to check on you.”

I crossed my arms. “Why?”

His eyes blazed. With what, I wasn’t quite sure. “I wanted to see you.”

“I’m going to need more than that.”

He reached for my hand and led me over to the leather coach. “Did you see the article?”

I figured that was what brought him here. My chest panged in disappointment that it wasn’t something more. “You drove two hours to see me because of some gossip article.”

He sank back in his chair. Dove a hand through his tousled hair. His jaw clenched.

I poked his chest. “Talk to me. It’s this thing where you open your mouth and words come out. I know you know how to do it.”

He captured my hand and held it over his rapidly beating heart.

I swallowed. The proximity made me dizzy. From here I could smell his signature scent that was all him. A little musk and evergreen. It made me want to curl up in his lap and rest there.
