I didn't bother with a rebuttal. She was right, when it came to her, I'd happily be as stubborn as a god-damned mule.

"I'll come with you," she said, getting up. "Is this always how our fireplace chats are going to end? With you pissing me off?"

"If it ain't broke."

She sighed, sounding more disappointed than annoyed. "Good night, Sebastian."

"Good night, Faith."

"I like her for you."

"Mom, please," I pleaded. "Keep your voice down."

"You've never brought a woman home before. I get that. You live with your mom."

"You live with me." It felt like an important distinction.

She shrugged. "At least we have separate buildings, but still. You're a handsome young man and I know you must get lonely from time to time. The fact that you brought her here must mean something."

I stabbed at my omelet. "It means I'm a good friend to Dominic."

She narrowed her eyes. "This has nothing to do with Dominic and everything to do with Faith and you know it."

"Can you drop it, please? She could walk in any minute now."

My mom lifted her coffee cup. "Just consider it. Consider opening your heart to her. You deserve happiness, sweetheart."

"How the hell am I supposed to know what a happy relationship even looks like?"

My mom flinched.

Fuck, I'm an asshole. "I'm sorry, Mom. I didn't mean it like that."

"Yes, you did," she said, setting her cup down. "It's fine. It's true. Your dad left when you were a baby and it's not like I had time to be in a healthy relationship when you were growing up. But that doesn't mean I can't still want you to be happy. My story isn't your story, Sebastian." She fluffed her hair. "Besides, I think I'm ready to start dating again."

That stopped me in my tracks. "You what?"

"I want to date. Faith told me to go for it."

I reined in my gut reaction, which was to protect my mom. Most men were assholes, and I didn't want her to get hurt.

“Faith encouraged this? When?”

My mom hummed. “She’s been stopping by after her morning walks and it just sort of came up.”

I sat back in my chair. Maybe this was what Mom needed. Companionship. It honestly never even crossed my mind. Maybe she wasn’t restless, or wanting to work, maybe she wanted someone to spend her time with.

She hadn’t been in a relationship since my dad. That was a hell of a long time to be on your own.

The idea pained me, but I’d have to get used to it if it was something Mom wanted.

“I think it’s a good idea. As long as you give me their full names and addresses so I can run a search on whoever you decide to go out with.”

“Sebastian-”
