Sebastian glanced over at me. “You don’t talk about her much.”

Tears pricked my eyes and emotion clogged my throat. “I know.”

“You loved her very much.” It came out like a statement. Sebastian glanced over, likely seeing the streaks of tears carving down my face. “Do you need me to pull over?”

I shook my head, swiping away at the evidence on my cheek. “No, no. That’s totally unnecessary.”

“It isn’t if you’re upset.”

I nodded, and then turned up the heat, a sudden chill wracking my body. As I adjusted the vents, Sebastian kept glancing over at me.

“Keep your eyes on the road. I’m fine.”

Sebastian shot me a skeptical look.

I rolled my eyes. “Okay, I’m obviously lying. I’m not fine. I just wasn’t prepared for the question, that’s all.”

“I’ll make sure to give you twenty-four hours’ notice next time.”

I swiped away another stupid tear. “It has to be in writing.”

Sebastian didn’t bat a lash. “Noted.”

I hugged my middle. “Now can we please talk about something else? Anything else? Preferably something that won’t make me cry.”

“Should we talk about where the hell I’m going to put a dozen paintings of Willow in my house?”

And just like that, the vice around my heart relaxed just enough to keep me talking.

“Well, I do sort of feel bad making the students give me their artwork, but I think they’re happy to donate it to you knowing that you’ll showcase it in your house.”

“And where the hell am I supposed to do that?”

“Anywhere. Literally. There’s the hallway to your bedroom. Or we could place them along the wall next to the stairs. We can scatter them throughout your whole house, a painting in every room. And we can force people to do a scavenger hunt the first time they come over. The possibilities are endless.”

He grunted.

“So…you don’t like these ideas.”

He faced me, eyes narrowed before returning to the road.

“Maybe we can do something else then. Auction them off or something.”

Sebastian tapped the steering wheel with his fingers. “We could auction them off and have the proceeds go to the animal shelter. I can call my buddy up and let him know the plan.”

I turned to face him, pulling the seat belt away from my chest to complete the maneuver. “I love that idea. I can promote it on my platform. Maybe split the funds between the shelter and the library? Get some more supplies and funding for Daisy’s programs.”

“We’ll do that.”

“I feel like I need a gavel or something to make it official.”

He just chuckled. “I can talk to the head of the shelter before we do it.”

I nodded. “And I’ll let Daisy know.”

Sebastian hummed. “We’ll need to come up with a plan.”

“I can do that just as soon as the gallery showing is over.” I rubbed my hands on my legs, the anxiety to finish these paintings causing a constant hum in my veins. I rid myself of the nervous energy by playfully hitting him on the arm. “We make a good team, you and me.”
