I immediately regretted my decision. "Fuck, that's hot." I guzzled iced water to try to numb the pain in my mouth then picked up a tiny spoon and stirred my drink to cool it down. "While I nurse this second-degree burn on my tongue, you need to tell me what happened between you and the sexy mechanic."

"How do you know he was sexy?"

I leveled at her. "Because you're stunning and mechanics are good with their hands and that’s inherently sexy."

The grown woman blushed, and my heart squeezed. Even if this turned out to be nothing, at least she was enjoying herself. Got to feel the thrill of a new relationship again.

Okay, so maybe I was projecting.

"He certainly was."

I pitched forward. "Will there be another date?"

She nodded like she was keeping a secret. "There will be many more dates, and a job."

"Wait, huh?”

Constance snagged a little sandwich and began picking at it. "Turns out Michael needs a receptionist. He talked about his last one going on maternity leave and needing someone to fill in, so I said I could do it."

Well, damn. "You want to work?"

She pulled back her shoulders. "I do. It's part time and it will make me feel useful. It will be good to have a reason to get out of the house."

I pointed to the fridge. "But you have your bucket list."

"And I can easily do both."

"Of course, you can," I said in earnest. "Besides, the office romance trope is a classic."

Her brow furrowed. "The what?"

"Never mind. This is going to be great. How are you going to break the news to Sebastian?"

Just then, Constance shoved the rest of the sandwich into her mouth.

"It's going to be like that, huh?" I chuckled. She chewed and chewed. ""You're not going to tell him, are you?"

"My adult son doesn't get to tell his adult mother if she can or cannot work. It's time for me to go back and do something. I'm antsy for it."

I held my hands up. "I agree completely."

"But?"

I laughed. "I still don't think he's going to like it."

“Well, that’s his problem.”

A few days later Sebastian slipped out of the covers earlier than normal.

“Where are you going?” I mumbled into my pillow. I hated that he was such an early riser. The man worked for himself; you’d think he’d be a little flexible with his schedule.

“Um-” he hedged.

And that moment of hesitation woke me up real fast. The comforter slipped below my breasts. Sebastian followed the movement and rubbed a hand across his scruff.

“Where are you going?” I asked again.
