“I learned something new,” she said, making me shake my head. She had the attention span of a goldfish.

“What’s that?”

“Well, I saw a movie where two people eloped,” she said, picking up her grilled cheese. I smiled at her, watching her take a bite. “Do you know what that is, Daddy?” She said around her food.

“Yes, Skye, I know what eloping is,” I said dryly, resting my hip against the counter and folding my arms over my chest. “What movie was this?” She waved a dismissive hand, shaking her head.

“Not important,” she said. “You and KoKo should do it!” I snorted, shaking my head.

“You think KoKo wants to elope?” I asked. “You think she doesn’t want a big wedding?”

“She said she doesn’t care,” she said around a grape and my head reared back.

“Wait,” I said, pushing my brows together. “You talked to her about this already?” She grinned wickedly and took a sip of juice.

“Yep.”

“God, Skye,” I groaned and dropped my head back. “You can’t talk about this stuff.”

“Why not?”

“Because you’re a kid, baby,” I said gently, looking back at her. Her brows were furrowed and her lips were tipped tightly down. “Kids don’t get involved with this kind of stuff.”

“But I want you to be married,” she whined.

“Why?” I asked. “Why does it matter, Skye? She’s already like a mom to you, nothing would change after a wedding.”

“Everyone else has a mom and dad that are married,” she said quietly, picking at the corner of her sandwich. My heart dipped and I sighed.

“I’m sorry,” I said as I rounded the island. I slid onto the stool next to her, facing her. “But you know KoKo and I love each other, right? And that we both love you a lot?” She sniffed, her eyes still on her sandwich. “And you know a wedding wouldn’t change any of that, right?” She shrugged, sniffing again.

“Yeah,” she said, sounding pitiful. “I just thought…” She let out a long breath, her shoulders rounding in. “Addie and Uncle Bashy are planning their wedding and—”

“That’s what this is about?” I asked, rubbing her back. “Because you helped Addie this morning?” She shrugged again. “Skye, when the time comes, you’ll be the first to know, alright? And you’ll help us with everything. I promise.” She nodded. “How did you learn what eloping was?” She glanced at me from the corner of her eye, her little lips twitching.

“Madi was watching a movie in my room the other night and I asked her what it meant.”

“What night?” I narrowed my eyes at her and her back straightened.

“I don’t remember.”

“No?” I tried to hide my grin. “Could it have been Ginger’s birthday the other night?” She shrugged and took a big bite of her food. “I thought I told you to go to sleep that night,” I mused, tapping my fingers on the counter, “but I have to be mistaken. You’d never stay up after I told you to go to bed, would you?”

“Nope,” she said around her food. “I’d never do that, Daddy.” I chuckled, shaking my head.

“Right.” I pushed to my feet and kissed the top of her head before making my way to the sink to do the dishes. “Well, put it out of your mind, alright? KoKo and I will get married when we’re ready. Don’t pressure her, alright?” She groaned in confirmation, and I shook my head again.

This damn kid.

SKYE

She didn’t understand what the big deal was. Uncle Bashy and Addie were planning their wedding, why wasn’t Daddy and KoKo? Skye just wanted them to be happy. And she was really excited to have a mom.

Finally.

All her friends had both a mom and a dad, and she only had a dad. Not that she didn’t like Daddy, she did. But he wasn’t good at makeup like Addie and Heather were. And he couldn’t braid her hair like KoKo.
