A part of me wished I hadn’t said anything about it since I was quickly proving myself a liar, but I wanted Aiden to know I wouldn’t fuck things up. I wanted him to trust I would be the best assistant he’d ever had, but it was proving a lot harder than I expected.

“You’re the new girl, right?” My shoulders stiffened, and I tightened my grip on my coffee mug. “We all saw you come in late yesterday. Boss Man must really like you if you’re still here.” The voice chuckled, and I swallowed thickly before turning around, a smile already on my face.

“It was just a misunderstanding,” I said as I leaned against the kitchen counter, feigning nonchalance. “My car had a flat and Mr. Rhodes understood that it was a freak accident.” The man’s brows lifted.

“So, you are special.” He folded his arms over his chest as he studied me.

“I wouldn’t say that.” I brought my mug to my lips and inhaled the scent of black coffee before taking a long drink. “I’m Dani.”

“David,” he said as he dipped his head. He leaned back against the wall, his arms still folded. “How’s your second day going? Is it everything you dreamed it would be?” I snorted and took another sip, ignoring how hot the liquid was.

“Doesn’t everyone dream of being an assistant?” I asked sarcastically, and he chuckled again.

“Are you already harassing the new girl?” I heard her before I saw her. A tall, insanely gorgeous redhead stepped into the kitchen, playfully knocking her shoulder into David’s.

“I’m not harassing her,” he grumbled.

“Yeah, whatever,” she laughed. “If they have tits, you’re bothering them.” I took another drink as I slid my eyes between them. “I’m Sadie.” She held her hand out, and I took it, giving a firm shake.

“Dani.”

“Yep, I know. You’ve been the talk of the office,” she said, grinning.

“I didn’t start off on the right foot, did I?” I winced. I had a hard enough time making friends, but add them thinking I was getting special treatment from the boss? It was going to be impossible.

She shrugged as she moved to the fridge. Opening it, she leaned one hand on the door, the other resting on her hip as she stared at the contents. “If Aiden is holding back his dickish tendencies, I think it’s a win for everyone.”

“Is he really that bad?” I asked. David nodded, but Sadie just threw her head back and laughed.

“Nah.” She shut the fridge door, apparently not finding what she was looking for. “He’s not really the big bad wolf, he just acts like he is.”

“Everyone else would say otherwise,” David muttered. My gaze caught on the clock above his head, and I quickly refilled my mug before pushing off the counter.

“It was nice meeting you, but I have to go,” I said apologetically. Sadie nodded and waved goodbye, and David stepped aside, letting me hurry past.

I rushed down the aisle of cubicles to my desk, grabbed my notebook, then hightailed it to the conference room. Being late to a meeting wasn’t going to prove how punctual I was.

Shoving the heavy door open, I slid inside and let out a relieved breath when I found it empty. Setting my coffee and notebook down, I filled the water carafe in the center of the table and set files out around the large table. Aiden was adamant that this was an important meeting, so I needed to make sure everything was perfect.

Seconds after I finished, the door opened. Spinning around, I forced my smile to be pleasant as Aiden and a shorter, fuller man entered. Aiden’s face was stony, his muscles rigid. Our gazes met, and his shoulders seemed to relax slightly.

“Jon, this is my new assistant, Danica. If you need anything, she’ll be more than happy to help you,” Aiden said as he stepped beside me. “The rest will be here in a few minutes.” I nodded and held my hand out, expecting Jon to shake it. Instead, he let his eyes roam over my body. They stopped at my chest, and he smirked. Aiden bristled at Jon’s attention, then pointedly cleared his throat.

“I’ll take a coffee, sweetheart,” Jon said, and I dropped my hand back to my side. I glanced up at Aiden, finding his jaw tense. “Cream and two sugars. Be a doll and hurry.”

Aiden’s body shifted closer to mine, and somehow, it made me feel better. I didn’t feel so alone, like I wasn’t taking this creep on by myself—I had Aiden on my side.

“Of course,” I smiled tightly. Aiden’s breath stuttered, but he said nothing as he gave me a quick nod, our eyes lingering.

I hurried to the kitchen and returned with a coffee for each of them, but when I entered the room, I found only Jon.. I set the coffee in front of him, then Aiden’s at his spot before taking a seat at a chair against the wall.

“Should you be in here, sweetheart?” he asked as he took a sip. “We’ll be talking business. It’ll go right over your pretty head.”

“I assure you, I’ll understand every word.” I smiled sweetly at him, baring my teeth as he laughed.

“Oh, I’m sure,” he said as he leaned back in his chair.

His eyes roamed down to my chest again, and that’s where they stayed. I tried not to fidget with my blouse and draw more attention to my cleavage.
