“Where are my clothes?” she repeated, frantically scanning the floor.

Sighing, I waved my hand at the door. “They’re in the living room.”

Without another word, she stumbled out of the room. I listened to her get dressed, and I groaned as I stood, hating myself for opening this door. We were having such a great morning; I should’ve left it alone. I quickly put some clothes on, but when I walked out into the living room, it was empty.

“Winnie?” I looked around the small apartment but couldn’t find her. Panic settled in my chest when I noticed the front door slightly open. Where the fuck was she going?

Rushing outside, I looked out at the parking lot, finding her walking as fast as she could across it. I hurried down the steps and took off in a full sprint toward her. She heard me coming up behind her; there was no way she couldn’t.

“Winnie. Stop.” I grabbed her arm, and she jerked away.

“Leave me alone,” she muttered, wrapping her arms around herself as she continued walking.

“Come on. I’m sorry. Please come back inside?—”

“Leave me alone.”

I took a deep breath, my worry about her and her feelings morphing into irritation.

“Go back into the apartment. Now.”

She scoffed as she continued down the sidewalk. My hand wrapped tightly around her arm, and I yanked her backward. She let out a soft cry as I forced her to spin around.

“Let go of me!” she screamed, shoving at my chest.

“Shut up,” I hissed, looking around at the few people walking on the sidewalk. “Stop making a scene.”

“Let go!” She shoved me again, and tears filled her eyes. “I’ll scream for help if you don’t let go.” We glared at each other, my jaw tense.

“You’re being fucking ridiculous,” I snarled, but her eyes just narrowed. “You’re acting like a child. You need to grow the fuck up.” She stumbled as I shoved her away, but caught herself before she fell.

“And you’re a sick fuck who preys on his students!” she shouted, and my blood went cold. I felt all the life drain from my face as I stared at her, my jaw slackening. A harsh laugh left her as she shook her head. “You think I didn’t know that? Everyone knows, Emmett.” She threw her arm out, looking so pissed and disgusted, but I couldn’t do anything to make it better. I couldn’t say it was a lie because we both knew it wasn’t.

“I didn’t prey on you,” I said hoarsely. Her mouth opened, but I continued before she could get a word out. With each breath, I found my resolve, and when I spoke again, my voice came out harsher than I’d intended. “You were desperate for attention. I didn’t even have to work for it. You willingly opened your legs for me the first time and every time after that. Maybe it’ll make you feel better to believe I forced you into it, but we both know the truth. You’re a slut, just like the rest of them, so pathetically desperate for love that you’re willing to do whatever an older man tells you to do.”

“That’s not true,” she whispered, and it was my turn to laugh.

“Isn’t it?” I cocked my head to the side, grinning at her. “You fuck your boyfriend every night, then get yourself off to me. If that’s not slutty and pathetic, I don’t know what is.”

Confusion flashed over her face. “My boyfriend?”

I blinked at her. Shit. Shit. She didn’t know I knew that. Fuck.

“I don’t have a boyfriend,” she said, stepping back. “How do you know—” She took a step back, looking warily at me. Dread pooled in my stomach at her words.

“Who do you live with?” I asked, and she took another step back.

“My…my brother.”

A harsh breath whooshed from my lungs. It was her brother fucking her every night? “Winnie.” I tried to reach for her, but she shook her head.

“Don’t touch me,” she breathed. “How do you know about…that?”

“I saw it.” She blinked a few times, wiping roughly at her face. “I—I thought he was your boyfriend.” Her chin wobbled as she tried to hold in her tears. “Baby, I’m sorry. Fuck, I’m so sorry. Come back inside. Let me help you.”

“How did you see it?” she asked, her voice raw. I couldn’t tell her that, though. Even if I wanted to, the words wouldn’t form. The only thing I could do was shake my head, my heart breaking for her.

“I’m sorry,” I said again. She took another step away.
