“Okay.”

His eyes move between mine, looking carefully into my depths before he leans down and kisses me deeply. I love the feel of his lips against mine. When he pulls away, I want to climb him and go back to where we were before, with him buried deep inside my body. He grabs his jacket and slips his boots on before he’s out the door. I turn back to Ryan and wait for him to question me like I know he will.

Shocked isn’t even how I feel right now. I look at the beautiful blue-eyed, brown-haired teenager. She’s shy and quiet but not as reserved as her adopted mother. She turns to look out the window, and I turn to see a couple of motorcycles sitting down the block at a business. My sister has a small, old shop that we turned into her home. It was one of our projects we did together, trying to rebuild this neighborhood up from losing the factories years ago. So many of the surrounding properties have sold and are currently active, transforming what was once a ghost town of a block into this bustling area. So it’s not strange to see the bikes because there is a club on the outskirts of town that I sold a piece of property to. Two guys emerge from the business, and when they turn, I see their cuts for the Shiver of Chaos.

“Don’t worry about them. They’re harmless,” I offer, thinking the young girl is scared of them.

“They are my detail for the day.”

“What?” I whip my head to look at her, my pierced brow dropping.

“Yep. Ley thinks I don’t know she’s gotten anal about the security details on me. Today she acted like it was nothing new, but it is.” She huffs out a big breath and drops her shoulders. She looks into an alley not far down. I look and don’t see anyone. “For years I’ve had some kind of protection. Be it boarding schools with lots of security to a team.” She shakes her head. “When we moved here, I thought it would change. Instead, it’s gotten worse.” She turns toward me. “Don’t get me wrong, Ley is the closest thing to family I have, but I wanted a mother, not a protector.”

I want to pull this girl in and give her a hug.

“She does love you. It’s how she shows her love.” I completely forget that Franci doesn’t know about Ley and me.

“How could you know that?” She stares at me with a brow raised, and I realize she is a lot like Ley and doesn’t even know it.

“Never mind.” I move away from her and head to where my sister is cooking with Gray standing over her.

“Franci, is there anything you can’t eat?”

“No, I can eat anything. No allergies.”

“Okay, I’m making fajitas and Mexican rice.”

“Sounds good.” Franci sits down on one of the stools.

I take in how comfortable my sister has become. Erika is dressed in a pair of leggings and multiple tank tops. The top one is flowy and shows off her blossoming belly. I’m still shocked she’s pregnant.

Franci’s phone goes off, and she picks it up. I watch as she moves away from me and overhear her telling someone to stop calling her. When she steps outside, I follow. I’m about to grab her arm when I’m yanked back and slammed into the brick wall of Rika’s house.

An angry man with dark hair stands in front of me. He’s got on a cut I recognize, and I know who he is, but right now he’s looking at me like he wants to kill me. His teeth are clenched, and his blue eyes are nearly black as he stares through me.

“Don’t touch my girl again, or I’ll kill you, Leif. I don’t care who you are.”

“Gambit,” is yelled from behind us, and I look over his broad shoulder to see Ley running up.

“Gavin, what are you doing here?” Franci touches him, and I watch the blackness leave his eyes, and he blinks. He releases me as if he didn’t realize he was holding me. He turns to look at Franci before he turns to Ley. “You said we couldn’t.”

“Fuck, Rogue, I can’t do this.” He’s gone in a flash across the street, and I hear his bike kick on. In the next instant, he’s racing down the street.

“What the hell was that?” I ask as I rub my neck. Two more bikes roar past us.

“Oh my God,” Franci cries and takes off running down the block.

“I’ll be back,” Ley says to me as she takes off after her daughter. I make sure Ley catches up to her before I head back into the house.

A few minutes later Grayson gets a text saying Ley is taking Franci home. I’m hoping she’s not running from me. I still didn’t get her number, and she’s supposed to let me alter our contract.

“I’m going to head out too.”

“But I have all this food.” Erika huffs.
