“I already tried that.”

“Just a moment.” I hang up and dial BUTEE. “Ms. Bennington, please,” I ask for her when the receptionist answers. The line clicks and then another person answers.

“Offices of Ms. Danvers and Ms. Bennington, how can I help you?”

That’s interesting that she shares a receptionist with the owner of the company. Usually, the CLO would be in their own area.

“Hello,” the woman says again.

“Um, yes, Ms. Bennington, please.” I was so distracted by the hierarchy of their office that I didn’t answer the woman right away.

“I’m sorry. Ms. Bennington isn’t available. Can I take a message?”

“No. I want to speak to her, now.”

“I’m sorry, sir, she isn’t available,” the woman says again.

“Go open the door and tell Briar to pick up the phone right now. This is Thor.”

“Thor, you said? I can’t. She isn’t in the office. One moment, please.” I hear another voice in the background and then she’s back on the line. “Hold, please.”

Yeah, that’s how you do it. She’ll tell me what’s going on right now.

“Thornton.” A voice I hate comes across the line.

“Where is Briar? I demand to speak to her,” I bark into the phone and hope she understands I’m serious.

“You can order me around all you want, but I can’t give you what you’re asking for. Briar isn’t here.” She pauses for a moment. “I sent her away for a bit.”

“You can’t get involved in our custody issues. I will get her and my son back.”

I hear a noise and look over to see Remi chuckling as he sits down.

“I’m not interfering. Give me a moment.” The line clicks as she places me on hold. I’m getting pissed off by this situation. “Thornton.” She returns. “May I call you Thor? We are going to be friends as long as you keep making our girl happy.”

“Our girl? She is my girl. Where the fuck is she?”

“I sent her away because she was attacked last night, and her condo was broken into.”

“What?” I fall back into my chair, the phone practically falling from my hand. “Is she okay? Is Rion okay? Where are they?” I yell into the phone. I need to make sure they are fine. “What happened?”

“What’s going on?” Remi jumps up and moves around the desk. He hits the speakerphone button when he’s by my side.

“This conversation needs to be secure. Are you alone?” Elora says.

“It’s just me and Remi.”

“Briar was attacked in her parking garage. We got emergency services there as soon as we could, but she sustained several bruises and won’t let the police investigate. She wouldn’t tell me what was going on. After she was discharged from the hospital, I sent her and Orion somewhere I know they’ll be safe. She didn’t have any issues until you came back into her life. She was doing well. Then this shit happened and the other crap,” she says cryptically.

“Where is she?”

“If you come here, where I know it’s safe and secure, unlike your place, I’ll tell you.”

“I’m on my way.”

I hang up on her and grab my jacket off the back of my chair. We head out, and I let Remi drive because I’d run everyone off the road to find my family. My heart clenches thinking about the fact I just got them. I don’t want to lose them now.

“We’ll find them,” Remi says, and I turn to look at him. He glances at me. He must see the pain and devastation in my face because he adds, “We can protect them. We have the money and means.”
