I’m shocked and look down at my shoe that made the scanner beep. Who the fuck would put a tracking chip in my shoe, and how?

“Would you like my security to come to your place and check it out?” Elora offers, and I see the smirk on her face.

“No. I’ll have my team check it out. Now, explain these threats.”

“Like I said, Briar was attacked last night in the parking garage. She was hurt and then today I helped her get away. She left early this morning. She and Orion will be safe. I have a full security team on them. Plus, where they’re at has no direct connection to her.”

“Where, and how?” I cross my arms over my chest and feel my blood pressure rising from the stress.

“I think, for right now, we should let them be. You need to focus on your business and stay away from them for a bit. Whatever is going on between you could be what is instigating all this.”

I uncross my arms and fist my hands at my sides before I relax for a moment and recross them. Focus on my business?

“Is that so you can undercut me on another project? I want to know where my family is right now.” I’m ready to fight her if I have to. “I can call my attorney and have her return my son immediately. I don’t want to, but I will.” I threaten and stare her down. She doesn’t give at all. She slowly stands from where she was seated, and I watch as she lifts her chin slightly and tips her head to the side.

“I find it interesting that all of a sudden they are your family. But what I find more interesting is that they are in danger because of you, and you are willing to lead that danger to them.”

“Me?” I scoff. “There is no reason for her to be in danger because of me.”

Elora breaks eye contact and lifts the tablet from her desk. After unlocking the screen, she hands it to me. I watch as a video plays. A figure is over Briar’s body, beating her, as she lies on the ground. By the size and shape, I determine it’s a man. In the distance stands another person. I can only make out the legs and some of the height. It could be a woman or a man. The video stops, and I look at Elora.

“How is this proof that I’m involved?”

She reaches across the desk and takes the tablet from me. After a few clicks, she hands it back. It’s on images. This must be Briar’s condo. I haven’t ever been inside it, but the floorplan is almost exactly like Chase’s. The walls are covered in spray paint and what looks like dripping blood.

“What the fuck?” Remi exclaims from behind me. I’m focused on the words.

Leave him, or I kill the boy.

“Him?” My voice cracks, but I’m sure I know who the him is.

“Yes, you.” Elora pauses and shakes her head. “You are the only man she has been involved with. Chase is out of the country, and he only helped with Rion. They were never in a relationship, no matter what you think.”

“But we aren’t involved. We have a son?—”

“Keep scrolling,” she orders.

I swipe my finger across the photos, seeing the destruction to her home. Everything is ruined. My son’s room is even trashed, but her bedroom is the worst. Nothing survived. I finally get to the last couple of pictures. She and I are kissing outside the ice rink. The last photo is of us with our foreheads together. My heart clenches in my chest because I know in that moment, I still love her.

I never stopped.

“Fuck.” I want to throw the tablet. I have no clue who can be doing this. “I fired my executive assistant yesterday, but this wouldn’t be her. She and I were never romantic. She was like an aunt or a mother to me. And I haven’t dated in years.”

“I get that, but someone is after you.”

“Other than you and your company, I don’t know who.” I set the tablet on her desk and take a seat. “Where are they?”

“Somewhere safe. I’ve been advised by the security team that you should give her a few days and then I’ll tell you. But she didn’t want you to know.”

“How did they get past the security in her building?” Remi asks the question I’ve been wondering.

“We think they came in through the garage. We are still trying to figure out how they accessed the penthouse floor and her condo. She has a fingerprint access keypad.” Elora holds up her hand when I start to tell her those can be bypassed. “I know they can be tricked. Camera feeds were interrupted too. So we are looking into all of it. She won’t stop until she finds out how.”

“She?”

Elora takes a deep breath as she purses her lips, like she’s thinking of something to say.

“I guess it’s not news to you that Briar has the technical abilities to figure this out. She set up a lot of the security measures for her place. She once told me the only person who could get past her was you.” She pauses. “Did you happen to help someone?” She smirks in jest, but I’m not happy about that because it’s true. I have the ability to bypass all her security. It’s probably why she didn’t give me access to her floor for so long. Shit, I’ve even created software for others to circumvent that security.
