I’m mostly pissed at Shelagh.

“What the fuck are you doing sitting there feeling sorry for yourself? Get up off your ass and go get your family back,” Remi starts yelling, and I turn to see him in the doorway.

“Why?”

“She told you she loved you.” His words sink in. He’s right. I stood there as she told me she loved me, then I walked away. She’s always reaching for love and getting turned down or pushed away. I left her hanging again.

I jump up from my desk, ready to storm from the room.

My assistant walks in with a board member and a couple of workers.

“I’ll be back. I can’t talk to any of you right now,” I say and move past them.

The elevator dings before I reach it, and I look up to see Chase running for me.

“What?” I can see the stark fear on his face. “What’s happened?”

“BUTEE is under attack. Shelagh is on her way to Orion. I sent security guards ahead of me, but we need to go, now.”

My knees almost buckle in fear. Remi grabs my arm and propels me toward the elevator. I look back at everyone as the door closes and wonder what they all wanted. I knew I had an emergency appointment with my board member, but I don’t understand the others. I can’t focus on that right now. My woman and son are the most important people, and they need me.

“How do you know? Why wasn’t I contacted?”

“Probably because you walked out on her Saturday. Plus, I’m an emergency contact for Orion.” He pauses, and I’m ready to deck him. “She called me,” he says. “Our connection was cut, so I couldn’t get many details. She said Louise was shooting at her and the lobby was under attack too. She also said Shelagh was on her way to Orion’s school to kill him. I called 911 and security to get to the school and office.”

“What? Call her back. Is she okay?” I fall back against the wall of the elevator. This is all because of me.

“I can’t. Her phone keeps going to voicemail.”

“My son. My woman. She could be pregnant again.” My voice is wobbly and thick. I’m anxious with fear for them both.

We rush out the front of the building and jump into Chase’s Bronco. Remi climbs into the back, and I get in the front, slamming the door closed as Chase takes off. A few moments later, he’s slamming on the brakes, and I look up to see cops blocking the streets. I rush out of the car, leaving my door open.

“What’s going on?” I run up to a cop. “My son is in that school.” I point to the building that I know is one of the best private schools in the city.

“Sir, just a moment. There was a security breach. We’ve detained the individual, but we aren’t letting parents in yet.”

“I called it in. I’m the one who notified you,” Chase says to the guy as he comes to stand next to me.

“Detectives will want to speak to you.” The cop turns back to me. “What’s your child’s name?”

“Orion Bennington.”

He nods and then directs us off to the side.

“I need to know now. His mother has been attacked too.” I need to know they are both okay.

“Your wife is at the BUTEE building?” he asks me, and I nod. I won’t correct his assumption. This right here is why I need to marry her as soon as possible.

“Come with me.”

He allows me to cross the line, and I look at my friends. I’m going to need them. I angle my head so they follow along. They ignore the cop and cross the line too. We all walk behind him after he huffs and walks toward men in suits and a car with a person in the back. I see it’s Shelagh, and I storm over to it.

“Why?” I bang on the window. “You bitch. I’ll make you sorry for coming after my family.” I threaten her and let Chase and Remi pull me back.

“Sir, you are Orion Bennington’s family?” one of the men in a suit asks me.

“Daddy!” I hear Orion and turn to see him rushing toward me. I bend down and he jumps in my arms. “She said they killed Mommy,” he cries, and I can’t hold back my tears as I’m worried too.
