I’m freaking out right now.

Something’s wrong. I think I’m losing the baby.

But I don’t really have time to process that, because another pain is building, growing to a blinding ache that’s pulsing through my upper thighs now too.

I need this to stop. I cradle my belly, pulling my legs to my chest and groaning.

The bathroom door swings open, and I register the gasp. My eyes pop open and I spot a girl, frozen in the doorway, gaping at me.

She looks like she’s struggling not to hurl as she mutters, “Oh gross,” and covers her mouth.

“Get out,” I whisper at first, but then she doesn’t move, and I end up screaming at her, “Get! Out!”

She flinches like I slapped her, then spins and darts out of the bathroom, leaving me all alone in my misery. I close my eyes again, the tears building behind my eyelids, burning and stinging while my body rejects this baby.

This little life that I wasn’t sure I wanted.

But now that I’m losing it… I kind of feel like my heart is breaking.

CHAPTER 44

CASEY

“Move. Move!” I shout at the people crowding around outside the women’s bathroom. I didn’t know which bathroom Caroline was talking about, and when I tried to call her back, she didn’t pick up.

That fucking freaked me out, and I raced through the Humanities building like a crazy man. Ethan’s been right on my tail the whole time, and it was him who whacked me on the shoulder and drew my attention to the crowd forming.

I muscle my way through them.

“…then she screamed at me to get out,” a girl is saying.

“I tried to go in there as well, and she screamed at me too. I’m not sure what to do.”

“This is ridiculous. Someone needs to be in there with her.”

“She won’t let us.”

“I’m calling 9-1-1.”

I growl, fear making me act like an angry bear. Shoving past the last two people blocking my way, I shoulder the bathroom door open and jerk to a stop when I spot Caroline on the floor. Her eyes are closed like she’s passed out. Blood is coating her pants as terror tries to choke and blind me at the same time.

“She needs to get to a hospital,” Ethan murmurs.

“An ambulance should be coming soon,” a woman says over his shoulder. “The operator is telling me they’re delayed with another emergency, but she’s on the list. They’ll get here as soon as they can.”

“Fuck that, she needs a hospital now.” Ethan frowns at the woman. “I’m getting a car. Case, meet us outside.” He starts muscling his way back through the crowd, and I barely acknowledge him as I slowly walk toward Caroline.

“Hey,” I softly whisper, crouching down beside her.

Wiping the hair off her sweating forehead, I bend down and kiss her hairline.

She whimpers, “Something’s wrong.”

“I know, baby.” It’s hard to talk, to try to hide my shock at what I’m seeing right now.

I’ve never been great with blood, but seeing her like this is fucking debilitating. She’s in pain, and I can’t make it stop.

A low groan comes out of her, and not the good kind, her expression buckling as she pulls her knees up, writhing against whatever is happening to her body.
