I need her. She’s always been the one who soothed me when I was sick, and as much as I appreciate Casey and all he’s doing for me right now, I want my mom.

“I’ll call your parents as soon as we reach the hospital, okay?” Casey’s voice is hard to hear, it’s shaking so badly. I’ve never seen him like this before.

“Hand me her phone. I can make the call now.” Ethan reaches into the back while Asher takes a corner too fast.

“Would you slow the fuck down!” Casey barks. “You’re gonna kill us before we even get there.”

“I’m sorry!” Asher shouts back. “That’s a lot of blood, okay.”

“What, you worried about staining the leather?” Casey bites back.

“Fuck you, man! I’m trying to get her help as fast as I can.”

I close my eyes against the shouting, burying my face in Casey’s chest while he barks something and gets a quick retort. They keep snapping at each other until Ethan shouts above them both.

“Would you two quit it! Asher ran out of his class as soon as he heard you needed help, so shut the fuck up, Casey,” he huffs. “And Asher, just fucking drive in silence so I can make this phone call.”

Everyone shuts their mouths, the tension in the car like a thick fog as Ethan gently asks me what my passcode is so he can unlock my phone.

I murmur the numbers to him, and a few seconds later, he’s talking with a calm that seems to take the sting out of the air around me.

“Yeah, hi, Mrs. Mason? My name’s Ethan. I’m a friend of your daughter’s.”

I want to hear the rest, but another pain snatches me and I gasp, tensing in Casey’s arms as the talons clutching my abdomen dig in deep and sharp. Another splurge of liquid fires out between my legs. This one feels big and horrific, and it makes me fist his shirt with a whimper.

Casey’s frantically looking at me, asking me what he can do, but I just shake my head and burrow further into him, hoping to God this isn’t enough to put him off me for good.

It’s probably a crazy thing to think, but I’m feeling weak and vulnerable right now, and I’m currently bleeding all over my boyfriend. If that’s not enough to put a guy off, then I don’t know what is.

Asher’s tires screech, my body jerking forward when he brakes outside the emergency room. Ethan’s still talking to my parents as Asher bolts out of the truck and runs around to open the door for me and Casey.

It’s awkward for Casey to slide out with me still in his arms, but Asher pulls on his jacket sleeve and soon he’s standing, hoisting me up and charging into the emergency room, yelling for help like he’s gonna lose his mind if seven doctors and the head of gynecology don’t drop everything immediately to assist his girlfriend.

CHAPTER 46

CASEY

They took Caroline away from me.

Put her on one of those beds with the wheels and made me come back out to the waiting room.

I sat with her and held her hand during the initial examination, which took forever to actually happen. Nurses kept fluttering in and out to check on her, but we sat behind a curtain in a small cubicle for an age before a doctor who knew what they were talking about finally showed up. I listened to the woman talk in what felt like a foreign language. Apparently this isn’t a standard miscarriage, and Caroline had to go in for some procedure. D&C—whatever the fuck that means.

I had to let her go while she cried. All I could do was kiss her on the forehead and watch her get wheeled off down the sterile hallway.

“You’re welcome to get a coffee or drink in the waiting room. Someone will be out with news as soon as they can.” The nurse had a nice voice, and I followed her pointing finger, shuffling out to the waiting room like a lost man.

Fuck. They better not be causing my girl more pain. I feel limbless without her.

When did this happen?

How did I go from Mr. One-Night Stand, Mr. Independent, to feeling like I can’t breathe if I lose her?

You’re not going to lose her.

She was in pain, and I couldn’t help her! I couldn’t make it stop!

My chest hurts. My head is pounding.
