“Either will do.”

“Here.” Caroline’s roommate unearths a blue piece of fabric from beneath the pile.

“Thank you.”

“Hmm.” The derogatory noise is made while looking at me.

I raise my eyebrows at her, then step forward with my hand extended. “I’m Casey.”

“I know who you are.” She crosses her arms.

“And you must be Caroline’s roommate.”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Do you have a name, or should I just call you Ice Queen?”

A short laugh bursts out of Caroline, but she quickly clamps her lips together. “Sorry,” she mutters to her friend. “But it was a little funny.” Caroline’s big blue gaze lands on me, and I’m struck by how pretty it is. When her eyes are sparking with a smile, she could take a guy’s breath away.

Like right now. She’s stealing mine.

“Her name’s Leilani, but her friends call her Lani.”

“Which means you can call me Leilani,” she clips.

“Or Ice Queen.” I point at her with a grin and score myself a very unimpressed glare.

With a wincing smile, I tip back on my feet and look to Caroline with a silent SOS. “You ready to go?”

“Yep.” She shakes her head.

I can’t help a quick grin. I don’t think she realized she did that, but I get how she feels. Visiting a doctor sucks at the best of times. And this is so not the best of times.

“Don’t forget to ask those questions.” Lani steps up to Caroline, her face the picture of genuine concern. It’s a pretty strong contrast to the death glares she was firing my way.

“I won’t,” Caroline murmurs.

Leilani’s brown gaze darts to mine. “Take care of her.”

“Of course I will.”

She rolls her eyes like she doesn’t believe me, then takes a seat on her bed, eyeing us up as we walk out of the room. I swear I can still feel her heated gaze on my back after the door’s closed.

“Wow, your roommate is…”

“Normally very nice.” Caroline sighs. “She’s just annoyed that you’re taking me to the doctor. She’s not your biggest fan and doesn’t trust you to take care of me.”

“No shit.” I raise my eyebrows as we descend the first flight of stairs.

“I think she’s just really bummed out for me that I’m in this situation, and it’s easier to blame you entirely.”

“Yeah, I guess that makes sense.”

“But it took two to tango, you know? And it’s not like we didn’t try to be safe.” Her words come out kind of rushed and quiet, her lips clamping together as we pass a couple girls on the stairwell.

“Hey, Casey,” some flirty voice greets me.

I raise my hand in a wave, not even bothering to look.
