Okay, ouch.

“Why? What’d I do?” It’s an effort not to snap out the words.

“Nothing.” She tuts and shakes her head. “Just forget it. I’m fine. Everything’s fine.” She takes a quick step away from me and scuttles left, like being too close to me is physically painful.

What the actual fuck?

When she spins and starts this weird kind of walk-jog thing down the path, I have to chase her. I barely need to run to reach her, and then her hurried steps are about equal to one of my decent strides. As soon as I’m beside her, she rolls her eyes.

“Why are you following me?”

“Why are you acting weird?”

“Because I’m a weirdo!”

“No, you’re not.” I take her arm, forcing her to stop. “I can tell you want to say something to me, but maybe you also don’t. Whatever it is, just spit it out. I said I’d be here for you, and if I’ve done something shitty, I need to know so I won’t do it again.”

“It’s not…” She sighs. “You haven’t done anything shitty. It’s me, okay? I’m… the problem.” She cringes, her fingers shaking as she rubs her forehead, then huffs. “I have… My body is…” Her cheeks flush red as she looks around her, going quiet as a guy walks past us. He’s wearing headphones and probably can’t hear what she’s saying, but she’s obviously embarrassed.

“Do you want to go somewhere private to talk?”

She bites her lip, clearly worried, but I have to get to the bottom of this. Like I can concentrate on anything if I’m worried about her.

“Come on. Your dorm’s like a two-minute walk, right?”

“Ye-ah. Y-You… wanna go to my dorm?”

“It’ll be private, right? You can say whatever you need to without worrying that someone will hear you.”

Her shoulders slump, the wind picking up a red curl and blowing it across her face. Chasing it with her fingers, she tucks it behind her ear and flashes me a desperate frown. “You’re really not going to let this go, are you?”

“No.” I give her an emphatic look. “You obviously need to get something off your chest, and I said I’d be here for you. Whatever you need. So let’s go.”

“Whatever I need.” She mumbles the words as if she’s talking to herself and then doesn’t say another damn thing until her dorm door clicks shut behind us.

I slip my bag off my shoulder. It lands on the floor with a thump that feels stupidly loud in this quiet space.

“Okay, Mason. We’re alone. No one’s watching us. No one can hear you. What gives?”

Wringing her hands, she stands in the middle of the room, her cheeks turning the darkest shade of pink I’ve ever seen.

Seriously. This is killing me. She’d better spill in the next few seconds or my brain’s going to explode.

“So, pregnancy is a funny thing.” Her blue eyes dart to the floor as she starts playing with one of the metal buttons of her denim jacket. “And my body is going through a lot of changes.”

“Okay.”

“And it’s weird, you know?”

“Not really, but I can imagine.” Would it be rude to say, “Please get to the fucking point”?

“And one of those weird oddities is that…” She huffs, running her fingers into her hair and fisting those luscious locks.

“Is that…?” I prompt her.

“There’s a lot of pressure, and…” She shakes her head, going still as she finally looks me in the eye. I raise my eyebrows at her, and she bites her lip. “You said you had my back, right? No matter what I needed?”

My insides rattle with a warning. Where the hell is this going?
