I frown in confusion, about to ask him to elaborate when suddenly… I get it.

He’s calling a girl the next day.

He never does that.

Ever.

Except right now.

A smile breaks across my face as something flutters in my chest.

“And if you ever need me to help you out again, just send me the word, okay?”

“Okay.” I nod, clamping my lips against the giddy laugh that wants to burst out of me. “Thanks for calling, Case.”

“Yeah, uh… no problem.”

“How much is it killing you?” I laugh.

“Actually, you know, it’s not too bad.”

“Great.” I giggle out the word. “You’re very brave.”

He growls in his throat, and that just makes me laugh harder.

“Seriously, though…” I let the last of the giggles ride through me before finding my voice again. “I really appreciate the call. Thank you. It means a lot.”

“Yeah, well… good. Okay. I’m gonna go.”

“Okay.” I can’t help laughing again as he gives me a feeble goodbye and hangs up.

No wonder he never calls girls the next day. He’s so awkward on the phone!

So adorably awkward.

I brush my thumb over my lock screen, my smile growing all over again as I flop back on my pillow with a giddy sigh.

CHAPTER 20

CASEY

I stare at my phone, then catch a glimpse of myself in the reflective glass.

I’m frowning.

Deep.

What the fuck did I just do?

I called a girl… for no particular reason.

What? Did I just want to hear the sound of her voice or some shit?

I must be losing my damn mind.

Slipping the phone into my back pocket, I scratch the back of my head, then shake it.

I called a girl.
