I laugh, picturing Rachel in fighting gear, puffing over Asher as he lies writhing on the floor. That’s hilarious! I love it when people can surprise you.

Like the way Casey did today.

Nerves skitter through me as I worry my lip. “Hey, um…” I let out a short breath. “That whole you being my boyfriend thing… you didn’t just say that because your friends were there, right? I mean, you actually meant it?”

His eyes dart to me before looking back at the road. I notice his grip on the wheel tighten, and my stomach sinks. Shit, he’s gonna back out, and I just gave him the perfect window to jump out of.

Crap, Caroline! Why can’t you just keep your mouth shut!

My eyeballs start to burn as instant tears want to take me out. I’m shot back to where I was this afternoon when I ran to Casey’s place after my fight with Leilani.

Shit. Why does she always have to be right?

With a heavy sigh, Casey pulls to the curb and turns off the engine. There’s my dorm. I eye the door, tracing the path I’ll run when I bolt from this car and disappear into my room for, I don’t know, the rest of eternity maybe?

“Hey.” He takes my hand, giving it a gentle tug. “Look at me.”

I shake my head. “I’d rather just keep staring out the window, thanks. It’ll hurt less.”

He snickers, reaching for my face and forcing me to turn. My stinging eyes take in his smile, and for a second, I want to slap him. Is he getting joy out of breaking my heart? Stupid asshole.

The growl in my throat makes me sound like a puppy, and it just makes Casey snicker again. I shake my fingers out of his grasp and reach for the door handle, but he grabs my arm before I can bolt.

“I meant it.” He rushes out the words. “And yes, it terrifies me, but I want to try this boyfriend thing with you. I do.”

Slowly turning back to face him, I give him a skeptical frown. He smooths the creases on my forehead with his thumb and nods.

“I’m not sure if I’ll be very good at it. You’re my very first girlfriend.”

“What?”

“I’m serious. I’m a one-night guy. You’re the first girl I’ve ever slept with more than once, and I’ve enjoyed it. A lot. It’s fun getting to know your body.” He skims his eyes down me, drinking me in like I’m his favorite painting.

Talk about the feels.

My chest is bursting with them.

“But I like hanging out with you too. You’re fun to be around, so let’s try this couple thing and see what happens.”

I nod, biting my lips together so I don’t accidentally tell him I love him.

Casey’s a flight risk, and I don’t want to screw anything up by admitting how hard I’ve fallen. I mean, I was practically in love with him before our first interaction. Getting to know him has just confirmed all of my feelings. But I can’t let them come busting out of my mouth right now.

No, I have to take this slowly and carefully… ease him into the whole boyfriend thing.

Boyfriend. I grin. Casey’s my boyfriend!

“What are you smiling about?” His mouth tips up on the right side.

I shrug, trying to contain the giddy giggle that wants to pop out of me. “I’m just happy.”

“Good.” He leans in to kiss me. “I like seeing you happy. I didn’t know what to do when you turned up with tears in your eyes this afternoon.”

“Oh, yeah. Sorry about that. I’d just…” I shake my head. “Gotten into a fight with Lani.”

“What about?”

My chest hitches. I’m not going into the whole Ben thing with him. I can’t. And it’s not like I can share Lani’s opinion on the matter either. Instead, I shrug and shake my head. “Just stupid girl stuff. You seriously don’t want to know.”
