Do I want to do it again?

I’m not usually into domestic shit like this, but as I wander out to the street and realize I now have to say goodbye to Caroline for the night, I can feel the disappointment simmering.

Shitballs. I’m falling for this girl.

I want to have more nights like this one.

My stomach clenches, but the ugly feeling is decimated when she smiles at me, reaching up with her lips and giving me a sweet kiss—the kind you’d see in a Hallmark movie. I deepen it because I can’t do small-town Hallmark. Give me passion. Give me fire.

But when she pulls back and looks up at me with goopy eyes, I find myself touching her face, rubbing my thumb across her cheek, and just drinking her in like she’s the only girl on the planet.

Yeah, I really am in trouble.

This woman is becoming more than just a tattoo on my wrist.

And no woman has ever been that before.

CHAPTER 29

CAROLINE

I float back to the dorm. Like seriously, it’s a miracle my body stays in Leilani’s passenger seat and doesn’t fly right out the roof of her car.

She doesn’t say much on the drive home. Instead, we listen to music, both singing along because it’s Miley, and her “Flowers” song is so damn catchy.

Leilani’s belting it out like she’s trying to make a point.

This worries me a little. She seriously never used to be this adamant about being alone and taking care of herself no matter what. I thought she wanted love, too, but ever since I told her I was pregnant, it’s like she’s been put off by the idea.

Maybe she doesn’t want to have any kids and is paranoid that a relationship will automatically lead to pregnancy.

But I thought she did want kids.

I don’t get what’s she going through right now, and I should really ask her, but I don’t want to ruin the buzz from tonight. Yes, I’m selfish, but I’ll definitely ask her in the next day or two. I’ll take her out for a cappuccino catch-up, and we can go deep on what’s up with her.

We reach our dorm room and I wander in, shedding my denim jacket as she flicks on the light.

“Okay, you have to admit… that was fun.” I throw my jacket on the bed and spin to shine my brightest smile at her.

“Winning was pretty cool.” She nods, placing her keys in the bowl while making a face. “I didn’t know Casey’s jerk friend was gonna be there, though.”

“Yeah, I didn’t either, but it’s lucky he was. The guy answered so many of the questions.”

Lani’s frown deepens. “I know. It’s so annoying that he’s smart.” Plunking down on her bed, she crosses her arms, and I can’t help laughing at her.

“Smart guys are usually your jam, babe.”

“Not that one.” She bulges her eyes at me. “He’s so rude and arrogant and blech!” She pokes out her tongue, so I decide to tease her some more.

“He’s kind of hot, though. That chiseled face and dark hair. He could be a cover model.”

She bites the edge of her bottom lip, then shakes her head with a growl. “Whatever. The guy’s a pompous prick.”

“Getting your alliteration on. You really must hate him.” I wink at her.

She rolls her eyes while fighting a grin. But then with a firm headshake, she clears her throat. “Casey wasn’t so bad.”

“Not so bad, huh?” I start unlacing my boots, probing for more with a little eyebrow wiggle.
