And now I can’t breathe.

I give him a noncommittal shrug and shake my head, but Casey’s working it out already.

“January.” He nods, looking painfully thoughtful. “How many weeks ago is that?”

“Don’t count,” I murmur under my breath. “Please don’t count.”

He must hear me, because when I glance up, his face has turned to stone, his usually warm gaze now icier than the Arctic Circle. My stomach roils like a hurricane is forming inside it, and oblivious Ben decides that now is the best time to keep talking.

“I was just asking if she wanted to go out with me sometime, but now I’m wondering if I’ve missed something and you guys are together.” Ben looks between us. It’s clear he’s wrestling with his disappointment as he asks, “Are you a couple?”

Casey doesn’t even look at him. His icy glare turns a few degrees colder as he stares me right in the eye and says, “No. We’re not.”

My heart splinters on the spot, and I stand frozen for a second as Casey stalks away and Ben stares down at me in confusion.

“What am I missing here?” He points after Casey, and I shake my head.

“Nothing,” I mumble, then spin on my heel. “I gotta go.”

Leaving poor, clueless Ben behind me, I grab my bag strap and sprint after Casey. I can’t let it end this way. He needs to let me explain. I have to make him understand why I did what I did.

CHAPTER 34

CASEY

“Casey, wait!” Caroline’s calling my name, but like fuck I’m stopping right now.

I’m still reeling, dates running through my mind as I work out that—fuck! I might not even be the father.

“Casey, please!” Her voice pitches with desperation, and I can’t help but glance over my shoulder. She’s chasing after me, and if she’s not careful, she might trip and hurt herself.

Dammit!

I shouldn’t fucking care, but my feet are stopping and I’m spinning to face her. She slows down, obviously trying to catch her breath as she dribbles to a stop in front of me.

Her blue eyes are bright with anguish, her red curls wild around her perfect face.

Fuck, I hate that she’s so pretty.

“Let me explain.” Her voice trembles, but I can’t help barking back at her.

“Explain what?” I throw my arms wide. “That you hooked up with two different guys around the same time?”

She cringes, rubbing her forehead with shaking fingers. “You can’t be mad at me for that. You’re a famous man slut in this school.”

“I’m not mad about the fact that you slept with another guy.” I spit out the words, meaning them, although the thought of her bumping uglies with some other dude makes flashes of green spurt across my vision. I clench my jaw for a second and take in a sharp breath through my nose. “I’m mad because you didn’t—” I huff and throw my arms up again. “I mean, what the fuck, Caroline! How could you not tell me this?”

“I… I…” Her mouth opens and closes a couple times, but no words are coming out.

I close my eyes and grit out the only question to ask right now. “Who’s the father?”

“I…” She looks about ready to throw up. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know.” I run my tongue along my teeth and let out this disbelieving laugh.

“I’m sorry, okay. It was a week apart, and I used protection with both of you. I don’t know which condom failed, but I needed…” She kind of whimpers, her face bunching. “I need it to be you. So, I made it you.”

“Why?”
