“Okay, and that’s when you saw the pig and the writing…and the burning cross?”

“Yes.”

“But you didn’t see anyone from the Colony?”

“No.”

“Did you see anyone at all?”

“I’m afraid not.”

“What about the folk preparing the ground in the cemetery?”

“They’ve had to break because of the weather.”

“No other witnesses?”

“No.”

“So, we don’t know for sure that the Colony is responsible?”

“Seriously, who else could it be?” Mowlam said.

“I’m just establishing all the facts.”

“The fact is,” Mowlam continued, “a young boy is dead and now the Colony are threatening the rest of the town. I’m pretty sure that warrants a cull.”

“I thought you were agnostic, Mr. Mowlam?”

“I’m also realistic.”

Barbara regarded him steadily. “I still need solid evidence that the Colony did this.”

“For God’s sake.” He looked at Rita, who had so far—and unusually—remained silent. “And do you agree, Mayor?”

“I think we should let Detective Atkins do her job.” But she didn’t sound quite so sure.

Barbara looked at Colleen and Grace. “Are you okay to stay here tonight? Or do you need some alternative accommodation?”

“Demons do not scare the righteous,” Colleen said.

“So, I’ll take that as a no?”

“I’ll call Jared at the hardware store, get him to come over and board up those broken windows,” Rita said.

Which meant another person would know. There would be no containing this. And that could cause real problems.

“Thank you, Rita,” Colleen replied. “It would be good to have the church weatherproof for the meeting tomorrow.”

“You still want to hold the meeting here?” Barbara asked.

“I think it’s more important than ever.” Colleen smiled. “We need to come together, as Christians, to face down this abomination. To fight the good fight against the devil’s disciples.”

Before Barbara could reply, Rita cut in: “The Reverend is right.”

Barbara stared at her in surprise. “Really?”

“We should warn people in case of an attack.”
