No.

It was better this way.

Staring at her, he tried to memorize the way she looked - the way the sheet was pulled tight against her breasts, the way her lips were slightly parted, her hair spread out across the sheets…

Forcing himself to walk out the door was the hardest thing he’d ever done in his life, but it had to be done. Once he was out, it was a little easier to walk down the hall. Once he was down the hall, it was a little easier to walk to his motorcycle. Once he was on his motorcycle, it almost wasn’t hard at all to drive away.

Almost.

Two weeks later

Looking up as Emily drove her new-used car into the trailer park, Damian couldn’t help but smile. It had been a week since she’d gotten her money, and he was still watching her comings and goings, but in a completely different way. He was well aware that park gossip said she’d gotten a new job that allowed her to buy the car.

No one was aware of the windfall that had come her way or the circumstances around it, but people had noticed some of the aftereffects. Like the car and the new clothes. Mrs. Martine had also commented on how she now had a smile on her face more often than not.

It hadn’t hurt that Damian had firmly told Mrs. Martine that Emily had a good new job in the city.

He wasn’t sure if she did or not, but he knew she would soon enough.

She was keeping busy; that much was clear.

And he… well, he liked knowing he’d improved her life. Liked seeing the car, the clothes, the smile on her face, and knowing it was because of him. He still couldn’t believe how she’d kept her circumstances secret from him and Katrina, and he obviously hadn’t told his daughter what he knew, but he was determined to keep an even closer eye on Emily from now on.

He also needed to get to the club again. Unfortunately, his desire to go to BDE and find someone to scene with, possibly to date, had died, buried under a pile of new fantasies.

Oh, he had gone. Once. Long enough to realize he wasn’t interested in anyone there, and all he could think about was Emily. Still. Instead of the one night wiping her away from his brain, she’d completely invaded it. He didn’t have to fantasize about how she tasted anymore. He knew. And rather than fulfilling the fantasy, it had left him wanting more.

His phone buzzed.

Mrs. Martine letting him know Emily had just gotten home.

It was funny—everything was the same, but everything was different, too. He still got the updates from Mrs. Martine, but Emily was driving into the park instead of walking from the bus stop. He was still obsessed with her, but his emotions had taken on a whole new flavor now that he’d had her… now that he knew she liked the same things he did… now that she’d called him Daddy.

He heard her voice in his dreams.

“Fuck,” he muttered, turning away from the window. He needed to get his shit together.

Tonight, he was going to go back to BDE, and he was going to scene with someone else. Even if he wasn’t feeling it. He needed to get himself out there and out of his fantasies with Emily. That was the first step.

Emily

“Okay, what the hell is going on? What new job did you get?” Katrina’s questions were more of a demand.

“Oh, you know, a job down in Charleston. In one of the offices there.” The moment the lie left her mouth, she knew she was going to regret it because she couldn’t just walk away from Katrina the way she did most of the people who asked. There was a reason she’d been avoiding answering the phone when Katrina called, but after driving past Mr. Elliott’s trailer and seeing him there… well, picking up her best friend’s phone call had seemed like a good way to remind her why she needed to keep her distance from him.

Daddy.

If it wasn’t for Katrina…

That was useless thinking because Katrina existed and was Emily’s best friend.

“One of the offices there,” Katrina repeated, her voice heavy with skepticism. “Which office?”

“Verity Health.”

“Uh-huh. And you didn’t tell me that you’d gotten a new job… why?”

“Well, we haven’t talked much…” Emily’s voice trailed off, and she winced. She hadn’t said anything to Katrina because all the lies felt somehow different with her. Maybe because of the things she now knew about Katrina. Maybe because she now knew Katrina’s dad in the biblical sense. Maybe a little bit of both.
