“EMILY?!”

Fuck!

“I have to call you back!” The words came out strangled, but at least he got them out before finally grabbing the phone. He fumbled it only a little before he managed to get it turned off.

Emily easily rolled away from him since his dick was no longer inside her. It had shrunk faster than if he’d put it in an ice bath. She scrambled up against the headboard, face pale, eyes wide, looking at him in horror. He stared back at her for a long moment, the silence hanging heavy between them.

His phone started to ring again.

Katrina’s ringtone.

“Fuck.” He groaned. He wasn’t ready to deal with this, yet he didn’t have a choice. All because he’d accidentally swiped to answer instead of rejecting the call. Fucking smartphones. This would never have happened twenty years ago. Sometimes, he really missed his flip phone. Meeting Emily’s miserable gaze, he sighed.

“It’s not your fault. Go get dressed. I’ll talk to her.” He had no idea what he was going to say, but he knew he couldn’t avoid it.

Emily scrambled out of his bed without a word. He waited until she was out the door, closing it behind her, to answer the phone.

This time, Katrina hadn’t used the video feature, which was probably for the best since he still wasn’t dressed, though at least Emily was no longer in his bed.

Fucking hell.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

“Don’t you ‘hi, sweetheart’ me! What the hell, Dad?”

Katrina was no longer shouting, but her voice was about two octaves higher than normal and shrill enough to make his ears hurt. Grimacing, he held the phone away from his head.

“Did I or did I not just see you… doing my best friend?”

“I don’t think that’s any of your business.” Shit, wrong thing to say.

“Not my… not my business? She’s my best friend! You’re my dad! I am the intersection of these two things!”

“I… we didn’t mean for it to happen.”

“Oh, her trailer burned down, and you just accidentally fell on top of her while you were both naked? What the hell, Dad?”

“How did you know her trailer burned down?” He hadn’t called her, and he was ninety-nine percent sure Emily hadn’t either.

Katrina scoffed, some normality returning to her voice with the conversation. She sounded like she was calming down a little.

“You seriously think news like that wouldn’t travel? I called her because I heard about the fire and that she ended up at our place. Since she wasn’t answering her phone, I called you. I just didn’t expect…”

“Right. Well…” Damian rubbed the center of his forehead. “I’m sorry you saw that. I definitely did not intend for you to.”

“Oh, so you were just going to hide it from me? How is that better?”

Fortunately, he didn’t have to answer that question because Emily barged back into the room without knocking.

“Let me talk to her,” Emily demanded breathlessly.

Well, it wasn’t like he was doing a particularly good job of it. Maybe the girls would do better. And, at the very least, he could get dressed. Wordlessly, he handed the phone off to her and hoped he was making the right choice. Taking the phone, Emily spun back around and walked into the hallway, closing the door behind her.

Damian sighed. He needed to get dressed before he talked to his daughter again.
