She was very curious about BDE but also slightly horrified at knowing her uncles were not only involved there but actually owned the place.

“Tell me all you want about the club, just not anything else.” Katrina made her usual gagging noise. “I still can’t believe Uncle Braden is running a freaking sex club.” She made the noise again.

“Well, I still can’t believe you never told me that your dad had a twin, so it seems like everyone’s keeping secrets.”

“It just never came up!” Katrina laughed. She’d been taken aback when Emily had said something to her. Apparently, she just hadn’t thought much about it, and it had never occurred to her to tell Emily that her dad had a double out there in the world. Especially since, according to Katrina, they didn’t see Desmond that much except at big family holidays.

“Yeah, well…”

“Oh my God, don’t you dare say ‘unlike your dad’s cock’!”

“I wasn’t going to!” That was something Katrina would say, not Emily. She couldn’t help but laugh. Of course, Katrina’s head would go there. “I don’t even have to make the joke. You do it to yourself!”

“And I need to stop cuz… eeeeeeeeeew.” Katrina went quiet for a moment. “I do love you, though. You know that, right? This is weird for me, but at the end of the day, I just want you both to be happy.”

“I know. And I love that about you. And he makes me happy.”

“Even though it’s only been like a week.”

“To be fair, it’s been a really intense week. And even if we weren’t dating, we… you know… several weeks ago.”

“I do know and wish you hadn’t given me so much detail when you first told me about it.” More gagging noises.

“If I’d thought you would ever know I was talking about your dad, I wouldn’t have,” Emily said, defending herself. She’d figured Katrina would never know. It was supposed to be a mystery. If she’d known Katrina would eventually find out, she wouldn’t have provided nearly as much detail about how good in bed her ‘mystery’ deflowerer had been.

But she’d wanted to tell someone, and Katrina was not only her best friend, she was probably Emily’s only real friend.

That really put a lot of pressure on her not to fuck up the relationship with Katrina’s dad since she didn’t want to ruin her relationship with Katrina. The smart thing to do would be to pull away before it became an issue… but she’d been living in his trailer all week, sleeping in his bed, and she was in so deep, she couldn’t see the exit anymore.

She didn’t really want to.

It was so fast—too fast some people might say—but it felt right in every way. Even things with Katrina were a lot less awkward, other than her bestie not wanting to hear about her sexcapades… but considering she’d never really had sexcapades to talk about before, it didn’t feel like a change.

“How are things going with your former professor?” Emily asked. Damian had been the one to tell her about him, not Katrina, which made her wildly curious. She’d been waiting for Katrina to bring him up, but since her bestie was apparently staying quiet about it, she decided to go ahead and ask.

“Oh, we broke up already.” Katrina sounded more morose than brokenhearted. “He wasn’t what I thought he was going to be. But hey, at least it helped me understand the appeal of an older man. Otherwise, I’d be a lot more freaked out about you and my dad.”

“That is an upside,” Emily agreed. “I’m sorry it didn’t work out with him, though.”

“Yeah, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about him. I thought you might judge me. Either because of the age difference or the fact he’d been my professor, or whatever, and I just didn’t want to tell people about it until I thought it was really going somewhere.”

“That makes sense, but I wouldn’t have judged you. It’s your life.”

“I know. I think I was judging myself a little. I think even in the beginning, I knew he wasn’t right for me.” Katrina sighed. “It’s just hard being single out here. Everyone just wants hookups, and no one wants a relationship.”

“I’m sorry, hun, that really sucks.” Emily had never really known what it was like to date, but from observation, it didn’t look all that fun. She’d gone straight from selling her virginity into a relationship, all by accident, and somehow, that was a lot better than having to date. Which said a lot about the state of the dating world right now.

“Alright, enough wallowing. I’ve gotta go to rehearsal and rant about my angry vagina.” Despite her words, Katrina sounded pretty upbeat. Whatever her feelings had been about her newest ex, she was already moving on. At least, as far as Emily could tell, though Katrina had always been good about covering her feelings post-breakup.

“Have fun. I miss you.”

“I miss you, too.” Katrina made a kissing noise and hung up the phone.

Sighing, Emily made her way over to the kitchen area, where Phoenix was sunning himself on the windowsill above the sink. She hadn’t quite made it to him yet when his head suddenly lifted, and he jumped to his feet, all the fur along his body lifting up as he hissed. Startled, she stepped back in surprise before hurrying forward to see what he was looking at.

Her dad.

This particular window had a perfect view of the bus stop and entrance to the park, and her dad had just gotten off the bus. There was no mistaking him—not that he was trying to hide. He swaggered along the sidewalk without a care in the world.
