Taking a deep breath, Elizabeth nodded her head. “Then you have my blessing.”

It was the first time he’d ever walked out of the jail with a smile on his face. A smile that disappeared when his phone buzzed as he reached his motorcycle and saw the text message Emily had just sent him.

“Fuck!”

Damian threw himself onto his seat, yanking his helmet over his head, and peeled out of the parking lot as fast as he could.

Catching the Arsonist

Emily

Gripping the slim canister of mace in her hand, thumb at the ready, Emily stormed out of the trailer, though she made sure to shut the door behind her. Phoenix yowled at her, but there was no way she was going to put her cat in a position where her dad might be able to hurt him again. And she would not be abandoning this trailer. Her dad wasn’t going to get the opportunity to burn anything down this time.

She’d mace him first.

Two weeks ago, she wouldn’t have been able to imagine doing such a thing to her own dad. That was before he tried to burn down her trailer with her cat in it.

She had a lot of pent-up rage to vent.

“Hey!” she yelled as she bounded down the steps.

Her dad had gone past the trailer, probably headed toward the wreckage of hers, and he turned in confusion.

“How dare you come back here after burning down my trailer?”

“My trailer,” he corrected her, shoving his hands in his pockets and smiling at her like she’d said something funny.

Emily stormed closer to him, gripping the mace so tightly, she had to remind herself not to accidentally squeeze the trigger and set it off. She stopped about ten feet away—close enough to talk but far enough he couldn’t easily reach her.

“And it was an accident… of course.” His expression turned to one of false sympathy. “Did you lose anything important to you, sweetheart? Maybe if you hadn’t been such a bitch, that wouldn’t have happened.”

Any hesitation she had about him getting his just desserts died at that moment. “I hope you don’t think you’re getting a payout from the insurance company or anything. The fire chief already pegged it as arson, and the cops are looking for you.” She reached into her back pocket and pulled out her phone, taking another step back as she slid her finger over the screen.

The smirk on his lips was replaced by fury. “Don’t you dare, you little bitch!”

He lunged for her, but Emily was ready for him this time. She swung her arm up, turning her head, and spraying him right in the face. Immediately, she backed up as he screamed, one arm coming up to cover his eyes, the other still trying to reach for her as he stumbled forward.

“My eyes! My eyes! What the fuck did you do, you stupid cunt?!” Her dad was screaming like he was dying, his hand groping for her.

Emily dodged out of the way.

“Take him down, Em!” Rio was running toward her from down the street while others were coming out to see what all the commotion was about.

Emily dodged around her dad and kicked at the back of his knee. She felt it connect, felt the shock as he went down heavily on his knees, catching himself with the hand he’d been trying to grab her with. Before he could try to get up, Rio was there, pushing her dad back down and grabbing his hands to secure them behind his neck. She gaped at him, and when Rio looked up to see her expression, he winked at her.

“Call the cops, chica,” he ordered.

He was almost as bossy as her Daddy, but she immediately did as he said. Her dad wasn’t getting away with anything.

Neighbors came to gather around, watching as her dad spit vitriol at Rio. The muscular man didn’t seem bothered at all, perfectly happy sitting on her dad’s back until the cops arrived. A car pulled up, and Damian got out— no… Emily caught herself as her heart leapt in her chest.

It wasn’t her Daddy; it was her Daddy Double. Bastian and Desmond had arrived on the scene, both of them hurrying straight to her while the other cops read her dad his rights. Rio had gotten up by then, a small frown on his face as he stared at Desmond, as if he was trying to figure out what was wrong with Damian. She wondered if he knew Damian had a twin or if he was as in the dark as she’d been.

“Emily, are you okay?” Desmond asked as soon as he reached out, taking her by the shoulders and holding her in place while he looked her over. Bastian was right behind him, though his attention was divided between her and her dad, who was now being pulled into a sitting position with his hands cuffed behind him. It didn’t escape her notice that both men had put themselves between her and her dad.

“I’m fine. He didn’t touch me. Or anyone else.” She smiled proudly.
