“Uh-huh.” He takes a few more bites. “This still about that chick you were all twisted up over a few months back?”

I concentrate on my food so hard even I’m beginning to think I might be searching for dirty images on my plate. Eventually, I shrug because I don’t really know what to say, or how to describe what’s going on.

“And?” he asks when I don’t follow that up with anything else.

I drop my fork on the plate with a clatter and lean back in my chair. Then I pick the fork back up again, but I’ve lost my appetite, so I just push the food around.

“I don’t know. Things are fucking weird right now.”

He looks at me thoughtfully. “So it’s serious, then.”

“You just guessing or something?”

He keeps shoveling food into his mouth. “People don’t look so torn up about things if they’re not serious.”

“I’m fine,” I say.

“If you say so.” He sends me a speculative look. “You gonna be able to keep your head in the game while you’re busy being all fine?”

“That’s the priority for you?”

“The fact that it isn’t a priority for you is what concerns me.”

“It is!” I protest.

He doesn’t look convinced.

“You should introduce me to her,” he says.

I stare at him.

“So I can tell her not to dump your ass before the season’s over. She can take one for the team,” he says.

I raise my middle finger to him, and he laughs before he sobers.

“Unless it’s you who wants to end whatever it is you’ve got going on?”

I shake my head.

“Okay, then how about this. Have you considered, like, having a fucking conversation about it with her?”

I sigh. “What is this? Therapy?”

“More like an intervention.”

“Yeah, thanks. You can stop now.”

“I wouldn’t know how. I’m so invested already,” he says dryly.

My middle finger is getting a workout today.

He drops it after that, and we finish the lunch by casually discussing the team and our chances at the Frozen Four.

Once we’re done, we head outside again.

“Want me to give you ride home?” I ask as I dig around in my pocket for my keys.

“Nah, I’m good,” he says, but he walks with me to my car anyway, and once there, he stops and eyes me for a moment.
