Fucking shit!

“He’s already in a relationship.”

He sends me a confused look. “Yeah, but… not like it matters, right? If he’s getting a divorce.”

Fuck me sideways! Am I actually going to do this?

Apparently so.

“It’s with me,” I say. “He’s in a relationship with me.”

The gobsmacked expression on his face would be funny if I weren’t currently on the verge of epically losing my shit.

Hayes slumps back against the car and purses his lips. We’re both silent for a long time.

“Well,” Hayes eventually says. “I did not see that coming.”

“Yeah, no shit,” I say. My mouth is a bit too dry, and the hand I card through my hair is a bit too shaky for my liking. I think it’s safe to say I’m not loving this ‘coming out and being my authentic self’ experience so far.

I don’t think either of us knows what to say now, and that’s why we silently stand next to each other, both avoiding looking at the other at all costs.

Hayes gathers himself first.

“Just to clarify, that’s a no on giving him my phone number, then?”

I smack him over the back of his head, and he lets out a curse before he lunges toward me. It’s a short, swift wrestling match that ends with us both wordlessly resuming our original positions.

“How did that even happen? Your brother.”

“Let’s cool it with the brother talk,” I say. “It’s not like we share DNA. Our parents were married. We never even lived in the same house.”

“Maybe stop advertising yourselves as brothers, then,” he suggests. I glare at him, and he holds both his hands up in the air. “Just a thought.”

“Thanks. You’ve been very helpful.”

“That is my goal in life.”

I can feel his eyes on the side of my face.

“Is it serious?” he asks.

“Are we going to talk about feelings now?”

“Just try not to cry on the jacket.”

“I’ll do my best.”

“So?” Hayes prompts. “Is it serious?”

I rub my palm over my face and blow out a breath.

“Yeah,” I say. “It’s serious.”

He nods slowly. He doesn’t say anything and neither do I.

Eventually, I straighten myself. “I have to get going.”

We say our goodbyes, and I jump in my car. Just as I’m about to pull out of the parking lot, my phone rings.
