“Do you want to get into a brawl?” I ask.
He shrugs and steals a piece of asparagus from my plate. “Might come in handy if I happen to have a lot of suppressed aggression I need to take out on somebody.”
“I’m pretty sure there are better ways to deal with suppressed aggression.”
He leans back in his seat, a smirk on his face. “Are there?”
“I can think of a few.”
“By all means, enlighten me.”
The look he gives me is very inappropriate for a crowded cafeteria.
“Deep breaths,” I suggest.
He sends me an unimpressed look. “What else have you got?”
“Screaming,” I say.
“Uh-huh.”
“Throwing something.”
“Right.” He considers me for a second. “If I were to throw you on the bed and then make you scream… would that work?”
There’s a crackle of energy bouncing back and forth between the two of us. An invisible tension that charges the air with something potent and raw.
“It’s a theory,” I say. “We should probably test it out.”
“Would be the responsible thing to do,” he agrees. “I guess we’ll have to just suck it up and get it over with. Have sex.”
“Yeah, no. I wouldn’t do it otherwise, but I’ll make the ultimate sacrifice for science.”
“You’re a regular Madame Curie.”
He grins at me and I grin back.
And I think… This could be us. For real.
It’s getting more and more difficult to hold back the words.
We finish eating and both get up at the exact same time, the legs of our chairs screeching on the tile floor. We clean up after ourselves and head outside.
It’s one of those slightly warmer days when it seems probable spring will eventually arrive here, too. Two more months, and it’ll be basically summer.
“You’re quiet,” Lake says.
“Just thinking.”
“About?”
“Random things. Summer. We should go to the beach. We could take a road trip, maybe? A few weeks of freedom. Just the two of us?”
He walks quietly next to me for a few more steps before he hazards a glance my way.
“I’ll be working most of the summer,” he says. “I have to. I need the money.”
“You have mone—” I start.
