He looks at me when I take up position and hold the ball out. Ryker shakes his head. “I’m gonna have to carry you out of here once we’re done.”

“You’ve got the shoulders for it. Might as well use them,” I say distractedly, and sink my ball into the cup in front of Jenna.

He raises his brows at me. “Lucky shot?”

“Fuck you,” I say half-heartedly.

“It’s actually impressive. I figured you wouldn’t even hit the table.”

“Steady hands of a future surgeon, baby.”

I roll up my sleeves, and when I look at him again, his eyes are stuck on my forearms.

I have to elbow him to get his attention. His eyes snap up to me, a weird look in them that I can’t decipher. Nor am I that interested in making sense of him. I might have steady hands even when drunk, but everything else is nice and fuzzy, including my thoughts.

“Ready?” I ask.

He grins. “I think I’ll enjoy watching you wipe the table with them.”

I send him a look of approval. “This vicious side of you is hot.”

There’s a faint flush on his cheeks.

Might be the heat of all these bodies packed in this space.

Or it might not.

We win the game easily, and then another one, and draw a crowd while we do it.

Among them is Ryker’s new ‘friend.’ The girl from earlier, who seems to find him so very fascinating.

Her name is Holly, and she’s studying architecture at MIT, because of course she is. She also seems very nice. And she’s very, very beautiful.

I sigh and add a splash of tequila to my beer. Why not? I’m already being a fucking idiot.

Holly, meanwhile, sidles closer and closer, her palm on Ryker’s back, her hair falling over Ryker’s shoulder. Lips against his ear as she murmurs something.

And now she’s taking his shots for him.

Giggling when she misses.

Cheering and jumping into his arms when she doesn’t.

And when she accidentally elbows me and makes me miss my shot, I figure it’s time to bail.

“It’s fine,” I cut off her apologies. “Tell you what, you want to take over for me?”

She sends me one of those bright, bubbly smiles she seems to have in ample supply.

“Are you sure?”

Because she’s considerate. Of course she is.

I hand her the ball I’m holding.

“Absolutely. Have fun, you two.”

Not straight, my ass.
