LAKE

I am in so much trouble.

But fuck me, I like the way Ryker looks at me.

This evening is a train wreck waiting to happen. I can see someone has removed the tracks ahead of me. And let’s not even pretend like I don’t have time to pull the brakes.

I absolutely do.

But instead, I choose this.

He shifts in his seat and absently rubs his right shoulder with his left hand. The muscles of his thick biceps flex and bunch under the fabric of his sweatshirt.

Train wreck. Waiting. To happen.

Somewhere in the back of my head is a faint whisper that warns me to be careful. To remember who I am. Who Ryker is. That I’m not playing with fire but a stick of lit dynamite.

Instead of dousing the flames, the tension underneath my skin heats to a boiling point.

Ryker’s gaze shifts to me, and the open, freely given, vulnerable desire in his eyes makes my whole body tighten with lust. He’s not even trying to be subtle, which is fucking stupid, and a part of me wants to yell at him to use his brain and be careful. To grab his shoulder and shake some sense into him.

One of us should.

But then there’s that other part that’s more than a little eager to give in. To fuck him.

Break him.

Ruin him.

A tiny, vicious, vengeful part that tells me to take advantage of his curiosity.

A bigger part that urges me to let go. To throw caution to the wind.

You know you want to. What harm would it do?

“You and Kelly,” he says, then stops talking.

“He’s a friend,” I say once it becomes clear he’s not planning to continue that thought out loud.

“Just a friend?” he asks pointedly, punctuating the just by raising his eyebrows for a quick second.

“Spit it out, Ryk. Whatever it is you want to know about Kelly.”

“I don’t sleep with any of my friends,” he says with measured calm.

“Maybe you should. It’s a lot of fun.”

His jaw tightens, and he chews on his words.

“But you’re not… seeing him?”

“I see him multiple times a week.”

He looks very much unimpressed. “You know what I mean.”

I could use some common sense right about now. A shot of good decisions straight to the vein, please and thank you.

“Lake.” His voice has an edge to it suddenly. A sharp and impatient demand that cuts through the air. “Answer me.”
