“Meaning that I’m not really that eager to be your experiment.”

He gets up too, and stands in front of me. So close I can smell his stupid shower gel or soap or whatever it is that makes him smell so fucking fresh.

“You didn’t seem to mind yesterday,” he says.

I grit my teeth. “Yeah, well. Now I’m not in the mood to play teacher. Guess we’re both experimenting. Go find somebody else.”

I don’t need this. I don’t want this. I don’t want any of this.

Liar.

Instead of leaving, he takes a look around and steps closer.

Until he’s pressed against me.

Chest to chest.

Hips flush against mine.

He looks down and sends me a smirk.

“Yeah, you feel really disinterested,” he murmurs those words into my ear, the smug bastard.

My nails dig into the soft part of my palm.

“You know those old Victorians behind the student center?” he asks, seemingly out of the blue.

I stare back without a word. Everybody knows the maze of narrow streets surrounded by old homes on all sides. A bunch of houses had been renovated into small, one- and two-room apartments. People are vying for those apartments. Figures Ryker’s one of the lucky ones who scored a place there.

“I’m in the blue one,” he says. “Apartment three.”

He steps away after that, grabs his jacket, and shrugs it on. And he doesn’t say anything else. Just gets going.

And leaves me there.

Unsettled, shaky, turned on, and pissed off.

This is the absolute last thing I need. To mess around with Ryker James. To get sucked into his life.

I will lose.

Whatever this thing between us might be, however enticing it feels right now when his presence still lingers all around me, however clearly I can picture pressing him to the mattress and pushing into him… In the end, I will lose.

I’m not going to be some pathetic pity case for him yet again.

No, thanks.

I refuse.

I lift my chin as if that’s supposed to help with the determination, and then glare down at my crotch.

Now all I have to do is get my dick on board with having dignity.

RYKER

Our Hockey Performance Center (which is a fancy way to say the gym) is located right next to the locker rooms. Practice begins here. Practice ends here. On lifts day, there’ll be extra sixty minutes of power development, strength training, and energy system work added to the regular hockey practice.

The gym itself, like the rink, the locker room, and the team lounge, is state of the art. If you have to put your body through sets of hang cleans, split squats, bench presses, single leg deadlifts, weighted chin ups, and everything else Mac Whitlock, our strength and conditioning coach, throws at us, this is the place you want to do it.
