“Thanks. I’ll healthily starve, then.”

“You would’ve starved anyway. It’s not like we took the pizza from your fridge,” Hayes points out.

I flip him off, and my stomach lets out a loud growl.

I should order something. Or make something, but that idea has even less appeal than takeout.

Or.

I could drag my ass back out and go to the diner where Lake works. Only I’m not a hundred percent sure he’s working tonight, and if he isn’t it’d make the whole trip pointless.

Plus, there’s the little detail that it’d be stalkerish as fuck.

Yeah. That one should probably be higher on the list of reasons not to do it.

Besides, it’s starting to look more and more like he actually isn’t interested, and I should probably just let it go and forget about the whole thing.

Something hits my temple, and I jerk in surprise. I pick up the pen and glare at Soren.

He glances at Hayes with a thoughtful look on his face. “Is it just me, or has he been really grouchy lately?”

“Must be puberty kicking in,” Hayes says, yawning. “My brother turned into a dick once he turned thirteen. Might be that. Give him a few years. He’ll be back to normal once the big boy hormones settle.”

I throw the pen back. It hits Hayes’s nose, which is a shame. I was aiming for the eyes.

“Well, I have something that’ll cheer you up,” Soren says. “I got you a hot date for tomorrow.”

“Unless she wants to spend time working on differential geometry, I’m gonna have to take a raincheck.”

“She doesn’t because no normal person does,” Soren says. “But she does want to meet you at the Delta party.”

“Sweet,” I say with as much sarcasm as hunger allows me to generate. “Remind me again, when did I ask you to find me a date?”

“Her name’s Camila,” he says. “She’s Harper’s friend. You can thank me later.”

“Yeah, no.”

“Why the fuck not?” Soren asks.

“I’m not interested.”

“It’s because you haven’t seen her yet.”

“It’s definitely not that,” I say.

He ignores me and pulls out his phone. He scrolls through it for a few seconds before he shoves it in front of my face, and I’m looking at some girl’s Instagram.

She’s hot. Dark brown hair down to her ass. Curves for days. Wide blue eyes.

“She’s Harper’s third cousin twice removed or something. My point is, she’s from Brazil, visiting the family for a few weeks, and she finds hockey players very exotic. Come the fuck on. You can’t say no to that.”

Not gonna lie, there’s a part of me that is seriously considering saying yes. Not because I’m interested, exactly. More because it’d be easier if I could somehow rewind and go back to the way things used to be.

Am I about to say yes or no? Fuck if I know. The knock on the door stops me from finding that out.

I get up.

“Seriously,” Soren calls after me. “I have a line of takers just waiting for me to say the word. I’m giving you dibs because we’re friends.”
