Lake tilts his head to the side almost innocently. “Yup. Things got hard, and he needed a helping hand.”

He quirks his brow at me.

My dick throbs.

I’m going to kill him.

“It’s nice of you to help out,” Hayes tells Lake.

“It’s what brothers are for,” he replies cheerfully.

Soren whips his head toward me. “You have a brother?”

“Stepbrother,” I say.

The stepbrother in question is currently leaning against the wall, the same cheerful smile on his face. Like he’s thoroughly enjoying himself. I’m glad one of us is, I suppose.

I have to look away from him for a moment to gather myself.

My eyes land on Hayes once more. He’s still looking at Lake with a kind of dumbfounded expression I’ve never seen on his face before. I’m not sure the stepbrother revelation warrants quite that level of shock.

As if sensing my eyes on him, Hayes glances at me, and then quickly away.

He clears his throat and gets up and pulls Soren with him.

“We’re gonna get going, then. Let you get to your tutoring.”

In another few minutes, Lake and I are alone.

I glare at him while I adjust myself. “A helping hand because things got hard? Really?”

He shrugs, unconcerned, eyes moving over the room before they settle on me again.

“So this is where you live,” he says.

I look around and try to see this place through Lake’s eyes. Try to figure out what he might be thinking. It’s a lost cause from the start. I never know with him. Put me on the ice in a pair of skates and I can read the game. Can feel it. I’m not usually bad with people in general. But Lake? He’s the exception to that.

“How come you’re here?” I ask.

He looks out the window into the darkness for a moment before he meets my gaze again.

He shrugs. “Suppose I changed my mind.”

“About?” A steady stream of excitement gathers in my belly. Excitement. Nerves.

“About being your experimental phase.”

I expected that, but it somehow still hits me like a cannon ball. I’m wholly unprepared and out of my element.

It doesn’t feel good. At least, I don’t think so. Not in the sense people usually interpret good, at least. There are too many unknown variables for that. But it’s exciting. Increasingly so. Exciting in that way you feel when you’re about to do something new. Cross uncharted territory with no idea what’s on the other side.

Nerves run rampant.

When I look up, I find Lake’s eyes on me again.

“You know, some would say a decent host should offer dinner,” he points out.

I glance at the fridge. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remember peering into it a little while ago and finding it empty.
