He just keeps smiling.

I’m being stupid. So fucking stupid.

Stupid.

And reckless.

The way he lets his eyes wander up and down my body? Yeah, I can see where this is going.

I know he wants me, and I’m pretty sure he’ll let me do whatever I want with him.

For two days I’ve been telling myself I’m done. Telling myself my curiosity’s been satisfied. Telling myself to let it go and move on.

Two days of self-control and hard work dismantled by a single look.

“Okay then.” We stuff my bike in the trunk of his car and get in.

He turns on the engine and glances at me.

I lean back and close my eyes. Just for a second. Just for a little bit.

“Are you going to drive or not?” I ask when we’re still standing still.

“I am.”

He still doesn’t

“Anytime you’re ready,” I say.

He doesn’t start to drive like a normal person would, because apparently he now wants to chat.

“How was your day?” he asks.

I let out a deep breath.

“Long,” I say with a good dose of finality in that one word.

He’s going to start driving now.

Wrong again.

“I went to the gym in the morning,” he says. Not pointedly. Not like he’s passive-aggressively reminding me that he asked about my day, but I didn’t ask about his. He says it easily. Like he’s talking simply because he wants me to know. “Then I skated for an hour before I went to class. Had practice in the afternoon. We’re playing Michigan this weekend, and they have a new goalie.” He frowns for a moment. “I know him from when I was in development camp last summer. He’s good. Shit attitude, though.”

And now there are warm, strong fingers against the back of my neck. Hesitant for a moment, but then firmer. And it’s as if that soothing rubbing motion combined with him telling me about his day activates my vocal cords.

“Got an A on my cell biology test. The only one in the whole class.” I stretch my neck to the side. His hand moves lower and kneads the junction of my neck and shoulder. “Then I had a lab. Three hours—half of that time spent waiting for things to distill. A very good use of my time, obviously. And now I have to write a long-ass report about what it is exactly that I did besides, you know, the waiting. Although, I do have to describe what I was waiting to happen. Dining hall had chicken noodle soup, so that was awesome.” I yawn. “I stopped by the library after school and got some work done. Then I had my shift. That’s it. It’s not very interesting.”

I groan, and my head falls forward.

“Fuck, that’s good,” I say.

He chuckles softly and keeps kneading. One hand is already awesome. I’d give a lot to see what he could do with two.

“You’re really smart,” he says.

I open one eye and peer at him. “Is that news to you or something?”

He shakes his head with an amused look on his face. “No. I’ve always known you’re smart. The news is that I didn’t realize before how sexy it is.”
