The skunk didn’t disappoint.

A loud squeal ripped from him as the nasty spray coated him. The smell was extremely foul, and Santee felt like he couldn’t breathe. He had no idea if the skunk had stuck around, because Santee couldn’t see.

He moved forward slowly then shifted into his human form, which only made matters worse. He couldn’t believe how badly his eyes and lungs burned.

Santee felt around, and when his hands landed on shrubbery, he shifted back into his bunny and crawled under them. He just lay there, praying the pain ended soon. Lord only knew how long the smell was going to cling to him.

Beckett probably wouldn’t want to come anywhere near him now.

Something nearby snapped. As badly as Santee was hurting, he forced himself not to squeal again. He wasn’t sure if it was good that he couldn’t see or bad as he listened to something pass by him.

“God, that fucking stinks,” Marvell said.

Crap, crap, crap. Just as Santee suspected. If that skunk hadn’t passed by, Santee was sure he would have been caught by now.

He listened intently, and the sound of his brother moving farther away made Santee feel a little better, but not by much. There was still a slim chance that Marvell would find him.

It felt like hours passed as Santee waited under the bushes. He was pressed so far back that he was worried his tail might be sticking out.

Then another noise caught his attention. Had Marvell circled back? Was he still looking for Santee, or had he given up, assuming Santee would eventually have to return home?

Santee still couldn’t see, and there was no use trying to scent whoever it was. All he smelled was the foul odor the skunk had given him.

“That has got to be the worst smell on the planet. I think I’m going to throw up.”

Wait. Santee knew that voice. It didn’t belong to Beckett, but it was definitely one of his brothers.

“It’s fucking with my senses,” Beckett said. “I feel for the creature it sprayed.”

That would be me.

Slowly, with his heart hammering like crazy, Santee inched his way from under the bushes.

“Oh my god,” the brother said, sounding more and more like Duncan. “It’s your little bunny smelling that foul.”

“Santee?” Beckett asked.

Santee used his paws to rub at his eyes, wishing the pain would lessen already.

“Babe, you smell too bad for me to know if it’s you,” Beckett said. “Shift for me.”

Santee shifted and then shouted, using the heal of his hands to rub at his eyes.

“Don’t rub,” Duncan said. “That’ll only make it worse.”

“I don’t think it can get any worse,” Santee cried. “I got it right in the face.”

“Which means you were a bunny when you were sprayed,” Beckett replied. “I’m going to guide you, but don’t take offense if I don’t want to touch you.”

“Ain’t no love strong enough to endure that stench,” Duncan said. “Goddamn you stink.”

“Enough,” Beckett growled. “I’m pretty sure he knows how bad he smells. And make sure you keep your eyes off my mate since he’s naked right now.”

“My eyes are watering too badly to see a goddamn thing,” Duncan said.

“Make it go away,” Santee whined. “I don’t want to smell this anymore or feel the pain.”

“Come on, hon.” Beckett took his hand. “We’ll get you home.”
