Santee hadn’t thought about that. He liked Paloma Keplin. He’d only been to Orion’s house twice, but both times she’d made him feel at home and made the best dang Spanish food.

“I knew I should’ve moved out.” Orion said.

“What do you mean?”

“If I had my own place I wouldn’t have to worry about Marvell finding her, besides, I’m twenty-seven. I should have my own place by now, anyway.”

“A lot of people still live at home at your age,” Santee said.

“If you say so.” Orion sighed. “I wish I could just get out of here. I’m ready to sleep in my own bed and I miss my mom’s cooking. Hospital food sucks.”

“Why have you been here for days?”

“The doctor said I had slight bleeding on the brain from my attack. It’s gone, I think, but they want to observe me,” Orion said. “I wasn’t really paying attention to what he was saying because all I could think about was getting home.”

Which only made Santee feel ten times worse for what his friend went through.

Santee jerked from the side of Orion’s bed when the fire alarm sounded.

Chapter Ten

Santee immediately grabbed Orion’s hand and yanked his friend from the bed, thankful he hadn’t ripped the guy’s IV out.

“What’re you doing?” Orion demanded.

“I’ve seen enough movies to know that what you hear isn’t because there’s a fire.”

Orion’s brows shot up. “Do you think Marvell pulled the alarm?”

“Are you willing to take a chance?” Santee countered. “Get under the bed. I’m gonna go to the door and peek out the little window.”

Orion waved a hand at his bed. “You can’t hide under a hospital bed. Anyone could see you.”

“Just stay put while I check things out.” Santee moved Orion until his friend was behind the privacy curtain. It wasn’t the best hiding spot, but it would have to do until Santee knew for certain it wasn’t Marvell who’d pulled the alarm.

Please don’t let it be Marvell.

Santee eased toward the door, his heart pounding so hard it should have burst from his chest. He let out a low growl when all he saw was the cop’s back. The guy was blocking Santee’s view.

Unwilling to wait for someone to tell him what was going on, Santee opened the door. The cop moved out of his way, and now Santee could see Beckett and Cormac taking up a protective stance in front of the massive deputy.

“What’s going on?” Santee asked.

“Go back into the room,” Beckett barked at him.

“Not until you tell me why that alarm is going off.” Santee had been told what to do his entire life, from his parents to Marvell, and he wasn’t going to let anyone else bark a damn thing at him.

Even if it was for his own safety.

And the sound of the alarm was hurting his sensitive ears. Santee just wanted the sound to stop.

His heart nearly gave out when he heard gunshots. Had he really heard gunshots in the hospital? Marvell must have really gone off the deep end if he was willing to shoot up the place to get to Orion.

“Santee!”

Santee spun at the panicked sound in Orion’s voice just as Beckett shoved him backward, forcing Santee into the room. Beckett stayed outside, the deputy once again blocking his view.

“Were those gunshots?” Orion asked as he paled.
