He looks miserably chagrined, “I wasn’t thinking, Zo.”

“It’s not your fault,” I reply just as miserably.

“You went to see Tori?” he turns to Jax questioningly.

Jax nods but doesn’t elaborate. He looks to me then nods towards Zane indicating he wants me to tell him, but I can’t. I really didn’t tell Jax. He got vague and generalize bits out of me when I was angry, but he really got the story from Tori.

“What’s going on, Zo?” Zane questions again. “Where’ve you disappeared to lately?”

I look down at the floor, unable to find the words. Jax pulls out his phone without saying anything for a few minutes, obviously texting someone. Seconds later, his phone buzzes. He opens the text and hands the phone to Zane.

The sound is garbled, but I don’t need it to know what’s being said. I was there. I lived every horrible second, for a second time nearly, had it not been for Tori.

I watch as Zane’s eyes flash with rage and fury. His jaw clenches. His face turns red. The grip he has on Jax’s phone is soon going to break it.

His eyes flash up to me, and I feel tears stinging my eyes. “Why the fuck didn’t you come get me?” he asks accusingly.

“I-I couldn’t, Zee.”

“What did he say to you, Zoey?” I flush, not wanting to repeat the words. “Zoey! What the hell did the motherfucker say to you while he had his goddamn hands all over you.”

“He told me not to say anything or he’d ruin you and Jax. He said that he wanted to see if he enjoyed it more the second time around.”

Acknowledgment flares in his eyes, but he asks anyway. “What did he mean the second time?”

The tears I’ve been holding back fall. My knees go weak, and I begin to collapse. Jax’s arms wrap around me as he brings me to the sofa.

“What the hell did he mean, Zoey? Is he the bastard that raped you?” When I don’t say anything, he yells, “Answer me, Zoey?”

I nod because I can’t speak. Jax holds me much like he did last night.

I jump when Zane throws the phone across the room, shattering it and leaving a hole in our wall. “How the hell are you so fucking calm?” he yells at Jax.

I hear a growl low in Jax’s hard chest. “I’m calm because of her. Because that’s what she needs right now. Do you think I wasn’t ready to tear him apart, consequences be damned when I got off that plane this morning? Rory had to talk me down and make me promise to give him time.”

“Rory knows?” Zane looks to Jax with a hint more calm. Like knowing that Rory is involved gives him some kind of understanding or peace.

Jax nods. “He went with me to New York. He’s sent the video to one of his guys.”

Zane’s shoulders seem to relax even more. Then he stands up and walks to the door. “Where are you going, Zee.”

“I’m going to find the motherfucker and beat the fucking shit out of him. Make sure Rory knows,” then he walks into the elevator without another word.

I turn to Jax in a panic. “He can’t do that,” I rasp. “You’ve got to follow him.”

Jax gives me a disbelieving look. “You want me to go with him. To be there when he finds that son of a bitch.”

I nod emphatically. “Please, Jay. Don’t let him do anything stupid.”

“Baby, you realize if I see that motherfucker, I am going to kill him, don’t you?”

“No. No, you won’t because you’re going to promise me that you won’t. And you won’t let Zane either.”

“Zoey, I don’t know if I can promise that,” he says looking at me with concern and worry.

“Yes, you can. Please, Jay,” I plead.

He kisses the top of my head then removes me from his side. “Alright, Angel. You win.”
