His head tilts, making a strand of hair fall into his face. “I needed to grab something from Casey.”

I spin around in my seat, giving him my full, hard glare. “She’s not here.”

“I know.” His hands drop, and he steps out. I tense with every step closer. When he falls into the seat across from me, my entire body feels like a rubber band ready to snap, but I stay quiet, waiting for him to say what he needs and go. “I wanted to see you, little flower.”

“You saw me last night.”

“Yeah. And I saw you leave with that guy. I called you.”

“I ignored you.”

He leans forward, and with his massive body, it puts him that much more into my space, so I scoot back on my seat. “I texted, too.”

“Same response.”

“Did you go home with him?”

I blow out a breath and snatch my glasses off so I can look into his eyes. “That’s not your business, remember?”

“I don’t care if you did.”

My eyes turn to slits. He doesn’t care. Is he fucking serious? Did he come here to tell me he’s over it? This is the man who has informed me on more than one occasion he will not share, but he’s cool if I went home with a random guy last night. “What are you up to?”

“Pleading. Begging. On my knees if I have to.”

My hair swishes around my back as my head shakes. I’m not doing this. This happens every time. He begs and promises it will be different, and I fall for it. “No. I don’t want that. I just want you to go.”

Then he does it. He’s on his knees in front of me. The jackass is so tall it only puts us at the same level, but still…

I push at his shoulders, trying to make him stop. “Don’t. Don’t do this. Please, just go, Liam.”

“I don’t care if you went home with that guy because last night we weren’t together. But I’m not leaving here until we are. Please. I’ll give you whatever you want, but I need you, baby. These past two weeks have been awful.”

“Goddamn you,” I hiss as I swipe a tear from my cheek. “No. I’m not playing this game with you. No more.”

“It’s not a game, Lily. You know that. We are real. I’m sorry my fucking issues keep causing you to doubt that, but this is as real as it gets.”

“Do you know the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over, expecting different results? You’ve made me insane. I need off the merry-go-round. It’s not fun anymore.”

“When Maddox comes home.”

My brows dip, and I lean back. I tilt my head to the side, trying to decipher what the hell Maddox has to do with any of this. “What?”

“The band is in turmoil right now with him gone. They’re pretending they’re not, but let’s be real… Maddox is the glue. Work is crazy. But once he’s back and things settle down, we’ll tell them all.”

My breath catches in my chest. His blue eyes sear into mine. Sincerity beams from them. “H-how long will that be?”

“I can’t answer that. It could be next week or next month, but they won’t stay in limbo forever. But while everything is up in the air, I need to focus on them. Once that settles, I swear on everything—on Casey’s life that we will tell them. I just can’t… If they’re going to fire me, I’d like things to be less of a mess, you know.”

Another tear slides down my cheek. A time. No, I can’t circle a date on a calendar, but this… This is big. Monumental. A sob wretches from my throat as I launch myself into his arms. “Yes. Yes, yes, yes.”

****

I lay across my bed, nose in my textbook as I prep for my social neuroscience final. My eyes burn as the letters and words blur, a clear sign it’s time for a break. The book slams shut, and I roll over the purple comforter, stretching my limbs before reaching for my phone.

It’s been turned off for a couple of hours while I crammed, and as soon as it powers back on, I get a few notifications. Mostly apps, but I have a couple of texts from Liam.

Just seeing his name makes me smile. It’s been a little over a month since he came here, and he literally got on his knees for me. Things since then have been blissful. We still haven’t told anyone about us because Maddox isn’t home yet, but we’ve gone on actual dates without leaving the city. He hasn’t stressed that we might run into someone we know. Or maybe he has, but he hasn’t shown it. We’re supposed to go out tomorrow night to my favorite restaurant. He hates it with a passion, but he’s taking me, anyway.
