“Kim,” she stated so quietly that I had to lean forward.

“I don’t understand.”

“He wrote this book called Kim. It’s amazing,” she gushed. “There’s this orphan in India, who is kind of taken in by a monk, and also learns to be a spy, and…” She stopped talking and hung her head for a minute before looking up at me.

“So, basically you’re naming our son after a cooler version of yourself?”

“Shut up!” There was no heat behind her demand. Kim started laughing as she threw her napkin at me to protest the way I teased her.

“I fucking love it, beautiful. One day, when he learns how he got his name, our son is going to love it, too.”

“Really?” She asked and my heart squeezed tight at the sight of the tears in her eyes. They were happy tears that I had put there. I felt like celebrating, but we weren’t there yet. Maybe later today, when I took her back to the clubhouse and showed her the gift I was giving her, she would finally realize how serious I was.

“I’m dead serious. I love it and that he will always have that cool connection to you.”

“But he already has both of our last names.”

“Doesn’t matter. It’s perfect and we’re not changing it now.”

“Everyone is going to think we’re weird,” she complained.

“So? Let them think what they want. I’ll set them straight because you’re going to be an amazing fucking mom, and that name is its own story to tell our son one day.”

“Yeah, you’re right.”

“You picked good, woman. Now let’s eat because I have a surprise waiting for you back at the clubhouse when we’re done.”

“A surprise?”

“Yup. Hopefully, one day soon, you’ll be able to share it with Kip.”

She giggled. “I like that. It’s the perfect nickname and it rhymes with yours. If I’m ever mad at both of you at the same time, I’ll end up smiling anyway when I have to call out your names.”

“Good to know we already have a built-in buffer for your anger. Another bonus our son will love to hear about later when he screws up.”

She shook her head, but the smile never left her face. “You’re too much.”

“Nah, think I’m just enough for a girl named Kim. That’s a lot to live up to, you know. Spy shit isn’t for weak people.” I winked at her, and she threw a packet of sugar at me that time.

“Thank you,” she insisted, completely serious as she muttered those two words to me.

“For what?”

“For not laughing at my choice.”

“There was nothing to laugh about, beautiful. I think you picked a fine name for our son. He’s going to be the best of both of us and his name fits that.”

Chapter 21

Kim

“Are you going to tell me what it is?” I asked Tripp as we drove back to the clubhouse from the restaurant.

“What part of “Surprise” did you not understand, woman?”

I rolled my eyes at him.Stupid man.“I’m pregnant, if you surprise me too hard, I’m liable to piss on myself, so a little head’s up might be in order.”

Tripp laughed so hard he had to hold his stomach. I didn’t think it was that funny. “Sorry, beautiful. I got a mental image of you standing in front of your surprise wetting yourself.”
