“Hi, Summer,” I nod, trying to sound casual, as if my blood isn’t pumping thick and hot, as if my balls aren’t so tight that they ache.

“What are you doing all alone out here?”

I shrug. “I’m not really into parties.”

She snorts a laugh. “Not into books. Not into talking to people. Not into parties. What are you into?”

I look up at the sky for a beat. “Hockey.”

“What else?”

“Does there need to be anything else?”

“Uh, yeah,” she says. “Like, I’m into music. I play all the time, I think about it all the time. But I’m into other things, too. It’s healthy to be balanced.”

I just bring my beer to my lips for another drink. She’s probably not wrong.

“We got an A on our project,” she beams, excitedly. “Ferrara graded it after class Thursday. Did you see?”

I turn towards Summer, one edge of my mouth tilting up into a lazy grin. “Yeah, I saw. Good work, partner.”

There’s not a lot of light back here, so it’s hard to tell, and it might just be my eyes playing tricks on me, but I could swear her cheeks flush a little.

“I wonder if Ferrara’s going to do a lot of partner-based projects this semester,” she muses, turning her gaze to the stars.

I have to stop myself from saying I hope so out loud.

Fuck, I should be bothered just by the fact that I’m thinking it. Summer’s not the kind of girl I can go for. I really don’t think she’s the no-strings-attached, one night stand type. And that’s the only thing I’m in the market for. The only thing I can offer.

Right?

This is why I hardly ever drink even as much as I have tonight. I’m not drunk, but my mind is still going places it shouldn’t go. I need to be in more control than this. I need to not let myself want things I know I can’t have.

Summer pushes up from her chair. “I’m going back to the party. My roommate is probably looking for me. I just wandered out here for air while she went to the bathroom.”

I nod. “Have fun. And remember, if anyone acts like a jerk or tries anything funny, my offer to beat up whoever you need beaten up is still on the table.”

Even through the shadows, I can see her cheeks go rosy as she laughs. “Noted.”

“See you next English class,” I say over my shoulder as she walks away.

About twenty minutes later, I venture back in.

Tuck seems to be trying to suck some girl’s face off. Rhys is talking with two girls, though he doesn’t seem particularly enthralled with the conversation. I can probably guess where his mind is. Sebastian and Lane are out playing beer pong.

I search for Summer but don’t see her.

I shrug, setting my beer down. At this point, I don’t think anyone’s gonna give me shit for calling it a night and heading to my room.

With my door shut behind me, my cock starts to throb again as I think about that glimpse I got of Summer’s exposed thigh while she sat next to me.

The cat is snuggled under one of my sweaters in her corner. With nothing to distract myself from the images in my head, I flip off my lights, kick off my pants, and use my right hand and thoughts of the girl I can’t stop thinking about to relieve the ache.
