I wanted to send Damien an endless string of texts, but I wouldn’t risk distracting him while he might be driving.

“I’m going home, I’m bored,” Cameo said after fifteen minutes passed. “Tell Damien he owes me 10K for those guns last month.”

Raegan shot her an open-mouthed stare. “You only came so you could bug him about money?”

Cameo shrugged, white hair ruffling down her back, and stepped out of our huddle, striding back for the lift.

“Where are you going?” Jonathan demanded.

Cameo shot him a look. “Not out the front door, keep your hair on. I’ll break into a flat and find an open window.”

She vanished before Jonathan could stop growling long enough to think of an answer. I was so distracted, highly strung, that I jumped when Serenity bumped me with her cold, wet nose, peering up with curious eyes. I didn’t have a hand free to stroke her; I couldn’t let go of my phone or my gun and—

The grate began to roll up with a loud rattle. My heart hurt so fiercely I felt its stabbing beat in my ribs. Please, please…

Jonathan grabbed my arm when I surged forward, his touch light but enough to freeze me in place. I gave him a pleading look. I needed to see, needed to lay eyes on my husband. I hadn’t breathed right ever since he was taken away from me.

“Rae,” Jonathan warned under his breath, jerking his chin until she fell back into the shadows, a scowl cutting her forehead.

The car that drove into sight was silver and nondescript, smaller than Damien’s car.

“Whose car is that?” Wyn asked, catching her sister by the back of her shirt.

“Saint’s. He’s got more cars than any sane man would need.” He met my eyes. “Go.”

I bolted across the tarmac, my heart slamming fast, something falling apart inside me when the driver’s side door flung open and my husband swung his legs out. He barely had enough time to stand before I slammed into him, throwing myarms around him as tears overflowed my eyes, winning the battle I’d been fighting since his family arrived. They flowed faster when his hand curved around the back of my head, his arm wrapped securely around my waist, the weight so reassuring that a sob twisted my breathing, and he ducked his head, inhaling a long breath.

“You didn’t listen when I told you not to worry, did you?” he murmured, kissing the side of my head.

“No,” I replied, thick and strangled. “I was so—so scared you wouldn’t come back. Nothing works right without you. You’re the only thing that makes sense anymore, I need you here.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” he promised me, holding me tight. “You don’t ever have to be scared of losing me, Vasya. No matter what happened, I’d have found my way back to you.”

I sniffled, burying my face in his shirt, his woody scent surrounding my senses and the weight of his arms around me finally calming the sharp edge of my panic.

He groaned. “I wasn’t aware London Zoo had an outbreak of animals.”

“Very funny,” Raegan said in that voice that managed to be dry and sharp at the same time. “We’re here for Vasya, not you.”

“Somehow, that’s ruder,” he murmured, not letting go of me for a second.

“What did they have on you?” Jonathan demanded, telling me everyone had surrounded us, like a protective bubble of friends and family.

“Nothing,” Damien replied, pressing a kiss on my forehead between words. “A tip, nothing more. No body, no blood. I told you Finch would never risk it being tied to his properties.”

Jonathan grunted in agreement.

“As lovely as it is to see all of you,” Damien said, his thumb stroking the back of my neck, “I’m gonna need you to fuck off.”

“Charming,” Rose huffed, but it sounded like she was smiling. “I’m glad you’re alright, Damien. Call if you need anything, either of you. Girls, you wanna come up for something to eat? I’ve got pizza and garlic bread I can warm up.”

“Hell yes!” Rae hissed, and I lifted my head off Damien’s chest in time to see her punch the air. “Let’s go, let’s go, my true love awaits.”

Wyn snorted, her dark eyes fixing on Damien.

“I’m fine,” he said warmly. “Go eat pizza, Wyn.”

“Don’t get arrested again,” she told him, her voice firm and unwavering.
