I have been on edge since Nate walked in on Edwin and me. Scratch that, I am now so far off the edge and plummeting toward the jagged rocks at the bottom of the cliff, except I’m trapped in a freefall, and I don’t know when the solace of death will come.

I run straight into Farley, almost knocking us both back to the ground.“Whoa, whoa, whoa!”

“Oh, sorry, Farley, I–”

“Everything alright?”

I huff. “Um, no, I’m afraid not.”

Edwin might be my employer, but Farley is my direct report.

And while I’ve always been afraid of disappointing Edwin, he’s never indicated his disappointment. Farley, on the other hand, doesn’t like it when things don’t go his way.

“What’s going on?”

“They need two more weeks.”

“Two more–” Farley’s voice is close to shriek- levels.

“Yes, two more weeks.” I blow past Farley to continue down the hall back to the main members’ lounge.

Farley’s John Galliano shoes follow behind me, an annoying clicking that competes with my own high heels.

“So, what are we going to do about the club closing on Monday?”

“We’re going to have to reschedule.”

“We can’t reschedule!”

I turn on my heel. “Well, there would be no point in closing when the project doesn’t need the club to close, now would there, Farley?”

Farley’s lips bunch up. He knows I’m right, and there is nothing to be done about it.

“But we’ve already informed all the members–”

“Well, we’ll tell them the date has changed. See? Watch.” I stomp out into the main member area and cup my hands around my mouth. “Closure date is changing. Be on the lookout for a notification on your member account!”

The people in the main area look at me like I’m crazy, but that’s just fine.

Screw it. Screw itall. If the builders want to question me, and Farley wants to argue with me, and Edwin wants to ignore me–

I deflate a bit.

Edwin is ignoring me. Yes. In fact, he hasn’t been to the club as far as I know since I ran away from his office.

It’s my own fault. I deserve his distance.

It’s broken my heart right in two all the same.

I have to do my job, though, which means pushing the pieces of my broken heart far away where I cannot access my feelings.

But since everyone wants to test me today…

Farley follows close at my heels as I head for my office. “Are you fucking crazy?”

“Maybe a little.” I shrug.

Farley grabs my arm and turns me to face him.
