Maybe it is just one of the construction guys who came in early to get something. Or perhaps a member forgot that the club was closed and maybe somehow the security protocol glitched and allowed a non-employee inside.

I wield one of my high heels in my hand, just in case, and call out in a friendly tone, “Hello? Someone there?”

I emerge from the hallway into the main member area.

It is empty and quiet. Even the usual waterfall feature embedded in the wall has been turned off while the members are gone, the usual babbling sound reduced to silence.

I look around. “Anyone here?”

No one to my left. No one to my right.

I drop my arm at my side, high heel clonking against my thigh. “You have to go to bed, like yesterday.”

I head into my office but stop in the doorway.

Perking up my ears, I try to catch on the sound that stopped me, the tiniest bit of hissing. Like ghosts conversing. I look back over my shoulder once more. Nothing.

My heart is pounding in my chest, made even worse by the fact I know I’m creating fear for myself, half-drunk on wine and all alone.

I’ve got to get out of here.

Plopping down in my seat, I get my high heels back on, the office chair spinning with me. “Fucking shit.” I’m unable to steady myself.

A snap. Actually, a click. And this one is close.

I freeze.

“Turn around,” a gruff male voice says from behind me.

What the…I sit up straight, not heeding the order at first, shock infiltrating my whole body.

I’m not alone. I haven’t been alone this whole time.

“Now.”

Spinning in the chair, I catch myself against the desk, finding myself face-to-face with two huge figures wearing balaclavas. One of them holds a gun pointed right at me.

Is this Bruce’s doing? Is he coming to collect now?

The panic button under my desk!

I start to reach for it.

“Don’t you fucking dare,” the other masked intruder says, a woman’s voice.

I freeze.

I may be brave, but I’m not dumb. There’s a gun pointed at me.A gun. The barrel is an empty chasm as might be my life if I don’t cooperate.

“Hands in the air. No sudden movements,” the man demands from behind the gun.

I lift my hands.

I’m shaking. I’m fucking shaking. Adrenaline pumping through my veins.

“What do you want?”

“You’re going to do exactly as we say, got it?” The woman comes to the edge of my desk and leans toward me.
