“No, not case and point, because I can assure you if you ever, ever, ever say that you want my steel rod in you, the opposite will happen, and I would even get flaccid.”

“Oh, please. No, you wouldn’t.”

Edwin nods. “I would.”

“If I’m naked in front of you, you’re telling me you’re going to go flaccid if I say–”

“The nakedness wasn’t a part of the original terms.”

I can’t keep from laughing harder than I probably should for a hospital room. “You’re impossible.”

“Actually, you’rethe impossible one.” Edwin cups one of my hands against my belly, leaning toward me with a serious look in his eye.

I narrow my eyes. “I have a feeling we’re not talking about what we call your dick in bed.”

“You’d be right about that.” Edwin is unable to keep a smile from creeping onto his lips. “No, I’m talking about something else. Something you have been avoiding.”

I reposition myself in bed, sitting up a bit. “What is it?”

“If we are going to be together…”

The word ‘if’ hangs in the air. I don’t like it.

“I have to insist you let me take care of your debts, Sonia.”

I knew this would happen. I’m in no position to continue refusing. “I want to work, Edwin. I want to keep my job, if that’s possible.”

“Yes, of course, but I can’t have you indebted to a monster for the rest of your life.”

“I’ll pay you back.”

He rolls his eyes. “No, that would be–”

“I’llpayyouback.” I sigh. “Look. I watched my father be in debt to everyone. The way he groveled, the way he tried to laugh it all off.” I point my finger at my chest. “I don’t laugh things off. I face them. Not only because it’s what I’ve always had to do, but also because that’s who I have grown to be. I don’t want things fixed with a magic wand.”

I hold the wand. I am the magic.

Edwin huffs. “If that’s a term you’re insisting upon, then fine. But there will be no interest whatsoever.”

“Are you placating me?”

“Absolutely.”

“Edwin!”

He leans in closer, his voice an excited murmur. “I’ve got money, Sonia. Not just a little stowed away, butmoney. The real kind. The world-shaking kind. Let me use itfor you.”

My lips curl up.

What woman doesn’t want a man who wants to take care of her? To do anything for her? That would be insane to refuse. I just never realized how damn sexy it was. “Are you bragging?”

“Sonia–”

“I’m joking, I’m joking.” I rub my thumb against the back of his knuckles.

Edwin’s jaw hardens. “I know you don’t want to feel indebted. And you wouldn’t be. Just because I take care of your debts won’t mean you are forced to stay with me.”

I sigh. “But what if I want to stay with you?”
