I shake my head. “Confused.”

“Understandable.”

“Like an asshole.”

“That’s not fair to yourself.”

“Bridget–”

“Sonia.”

We glare at each other, and then we both smile.

We have a shared language already. Like we’ve known each other for years and years. That’s how it is with kindred spirits, I guess.

“He’s my boss.”

Bridget shrugs. “I think we’re kind of over that at this point. But maybe it’s that other little problem. The surfing one?”

I close my eyes and tap my foot on the ground.

After Bridget had to sneak out of my apartment, we talked about the Nate thing. I told her the truth, that Nate is my ex-boyfriend, and I knew that the Lyons Club was his family’s place, but I had no idea that when I danced with Edwin the night of the masquerade that Edwin was hisdad.“You’re the only person who knows about N-A-T-E.”

“People can spell, Sonia. It’s not like we’re in a restaurant full of dogs.”

I look over my shoulder again to make sure no one islistening. “That’s the problem. Edwin doesn’t even know that Nate is my ex.”

Bridget’s eyes widen. “Ohhhh….”

“Yeah….”

“That is…”

“Mhm…”

“Conflict of interest. Just a little.”

I smack my hand against my forehead and lean on the table. “Why oh why did I have to fall for my ex-boyfriend’sdad?”

“Well, it’s not like they talk.” Bridget lowers her cutlery. “Like, you could probably go on like this for a while without Edwin even finding out.”

I sigh. “Nate’s still ignoring him?”

“Yeah, it’s been…well, it’s been intense.”

I know that Nate has a lot of grudges against his father. But he never told me all the details. All I know is that it’s messy, and he moved out to California to start anew.

Bridget told me that Edwin has been trying to get into contact with Nate, and Nate’s been avoiding it. But I didn’t think Nate would dog his own father forever. He’s all peace and love on the inside, except for when he’s angry.

And maybe that’s just it. Maybe he and Edwin are more alike than either would like to admit. Nate’s been ignoring that fire.

And Edwin…maybe Edwin’s been ignoring the love.

If they could just see things from each other’s shoes, they’d probably be able to fix everything.

However, I’d be cut out of the equation if father and son reunited. A common enemy.

“You should just tell Edwin.”
