But I still need my friend to try. “I need to see Nate. In private.” That meeting at the beach wasn’t enough. Five minutes of hurling insults at each other was the last thing I wanted.

No, I need an audience with Nate somewhere we can talk. Give each other hell. Maybe even find some common ground. “Jack has tried, Abigail has tried…Mason isn’t an option here. So, I need Seth to work a little harder.”

“Edwin, have you ever considered that you might just need to let Nate come to you?”

I scoff. “That will never happen.”

“You wouldn’t know unless you tried.”

“And what would I have to do to allow that to happen?” I look at Sol like he’s crazy.

Solomon smiles, ageless sadness in his eyes. “You’d have to let it go.”

I push myself up from the windowsill where I’ve been leaning up talking to Solomon and head for my office door. “You know I can’t do that.”

“Is this your way of saying the conversation is over?”

“Yup.” I open the door and start to step out to go deal withanythingelse.

“Edwin, wait.”

I stop and turn back to face my friend.

Solomon pushes himself up out of the chair, the wood creaking, until he stands to his full height. He smiles and gives me a nod. “I’ll try my best. Okay? I can’t make promises, but I’ll try. I know Seth still has very fond memories of his father. He might take kindly to your plight.”

I can’t explain it, but his agreement makes me want to cry. I know he’d do anything for me, anything in his power. However, it’s the feeling that there is still a possibility in patching things up with Nate. This might be my last shot. “Thank you, Sol.”

My friend shakes my hand and then kicks off down the hall to go answer emails.

Against my better judgment, my feet guide me to the member’s club. It’s never a bad idea to show face around there, field comments and concerns, or connect with members new and old. However, now it’s always a risk that I’ll run into Sonia.

Of course, running into Sonia is never a bad thing. Just difficult to stay focused on work when I layeyes on her.

All I want to do is throw her over my shoulder, kicking and screaming, and take her into The Underground to give her a deserved spanking for forcing this distance between us. And then shower her with pleasures beyond her wildest dreams.

Other times, though, I see her and just want to feel engulfed by her arms, feel her breath on my neck.

I’ve considered telling her about the troubles with my son. I don’t want to burden her with more, considering she seems to be having her own personal difficulties.

When she asked me if I was alright, though, that’s when everything snapped open.

To my delight, Sonia is out of her office, talking with the sommelier at the makeshift wine bar. Our eyes connect for the briefest moment. I give her a small nod and a smile. “Sonia.”

“Edwin.”

I continue my trajectory into the member’s area.

I’m giving Sonia time. To come to me. I know there was a tentative agreement between us that something is budding here. But I already chased her through the club, trying to get her to look at me. Now I have to wait for her move.

However, I am not good at playing coy. I’m good at being withholding, but staying away from what I want is a whole other ballgame.

I take a seat with some members just a bit off from the wine bar. And I tune my ears not to the conversation in front of me, since one can only chat about stocks so much, but to the one between Sonia and the sommelier.

“I’m running out of pantyhose.” Sonia sighs.

“Oh, come on, that’s what your stipend is for.”

We give all our employees a rather substantial clothing stipend doled out in monthly increments.
