“Well, you look very nice, Ms. Hill.”

“Thank you, sir.”

God, if she keeps doing that, I’m going to come right in my pants without a single touch. This will not do. “I think you’ll look even better after our meeting tonight.”

And with that, I leave the office, letting her gawk after me, no doubt wondering what sort of deviance awaits her tonight.

SONIA

When Edwin saidI would look better after our meeting, a thousand thoughts crossed my mind, but I never even came close to this.

I thought that was some flirtation about how he was going to have his way with me and leave me all sweaty and sticky, more beautiful to his eye than anyone’s.

But after hustling me into his private car, he made no move to tear me apart. Instead, he sat on his side and I sat on mine, both of us pretending our eyes wanted to be on anything but each other.

However, by the end of the ride, our hands were plastered onto the seat between us, pinkies touching. Once the car was parked, Edwin grabbed me by the hand and yanked me out onto the sidewalk right in front of Bergdorf’s.

Edwin opens the door for me, and I step out and look around. “What are we doing here?”

“You’ll see.”

The second I step inside, I feel like I’m not even worthy oflookingat anything. Past Birkin bags and jewels of mythicproportion, up an elevator to a floor where I am greeted by furs and couture gowns.

My eyes take everything in. “We have a…a ‘meeting’ here?”

“Yes, there’s someone here I’d like you to meet. Therefore, it’s a meeting, isn’t it?”

Edwin guides me through the store, a delicate hand on my back.

I’m still so shell-shocked I’m not sure I’d be able to walk without his prompting.

We eventually make it to a private area where there’s an older woman waiting with a rack of clothes.

“Rebecca.” His tone shows fondness as he goes to the woman, kissing both her cheeks.

“Edwin, it’s been a while, hasn’t it?” She looks him up and down. “This suit is old, isn’t it?”

He clears his throat. “Some would call it vintage?”

“Five years is not vintage yet, sweet pea. Now, who is this?” Rebecca’s eyes, magnified through her dark, circular glasses, lock onto me.

My body warms all over when Edwin rests his hand on my shoulder. “This is Sonia. She’s our operations manager at the club, and she’s in need of some new pieces for her wardrobe.”

I gasp. “Really, Edwin, that’s not necessary, I–”

“Ah, yes, I see that. We’re looking a little dusty.”

I do a double-take.Dusty?!

“Well, I wouldn’t say that, not at all.”

Rebecca eyes Edwin. “Well, I would. Because that’s my job. Now, come here, Sonia. Let’s get started, shall we? I’ve already pulled some items here for you. I think we should start with this one.” She pulls out a gray dress that hasstructured shoulders and geometric darts at the hips. The design is amazing.

And far too expensive.

I look over at Edwin with what I’m sure look like crazed eyes.
